Position Overview: Museum Educator

Department: Education-04

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Reports to: Director

The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame is seeking an enthusiastic, dynamic, public-facing Museum Educator to lead its educational initiatives, bringing a strategic vision to advance and expand the Museum’s programming.

The Museum Educator is responsible for creating, implementing, maintaining, and promoting educational programs that reflect the Museum’s mission to preserve and promote the history of Thoroughbred racing in America and to honor the sport’s most accomplished participants in the Official National Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame.

This position extends the interpretation and presentation of the Museum’s collection to the public through the development and implementation of curriculum-based programs for youth, as well as educational offerings for adult audiences on both a local and national level.

Position Responsibilities

General Responsibilities

  • Supervise and provide leadership to the Education Program Coordinator
  • Oversee and manage the Education Department budget, including supplies, program expenses, grant research, and revenue and attendance projections
  • Plan, lead, and document Education Committee meetings, including agendas, minutes, and communications
  • Partner with Museum departments to develop, promote, fund, and deliver educational programming

1. Youth Programs

  • Develop, coordinate, and deliver educational programming for audiences ranging from preschool through college, including weekly preschool drop-in programs, Girl Scouts, 4-H, BOCES, camps, Health, History and Horses (4th grade curriculum), and high school and college programs
  • Coordinate, manage, and display the annual student art exhibition
  • Expand the Museum’s education offerings by introducing new programs and tours based on the Museum’s collection and changing exhibits
  • Facilitate the Readers Up! program with elementary schools locally and nationally
  • Develop and coordinate the eight-week summer program, Backstretch Buddies, for Faith’s House children
  • Develop, coordinate, and deliver special programs targeting youth and their families, such as Family Fun Days and other Museum events
  • Develop outreach programs to present in schools
  • Plan special events and solicit donations (e.g., Student Art Show, school vacation programming)
  • Partner with Thoroughbred industry stakeholders and regional organizations to deliver special programming

2. Adult Programs

  • Develop, coordinate, and deliver educational programming for adults, including guided tours of the Museum and Oklahoma Training Track, Photo Finish photography tours, and on-site and off-site speaking engagements
  • Coordinate and manage the annual book club, including communication with participants and authors
  • Create programs highlighting special Museum exhibitions, including those focused on significant historical moments and events
  • Facilitate community outreach programs and presentations

3. Online Programming

  • Create and facilitate online educational programming and virtual tours via Facebook Live, YouTube, and Zoom for audiences of all ages

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in education, museum studies, history, equine studies, or a related field required. Minimum of 3-5 years of relevant experience in museum education, teaching, public programming, or a related field required. Knowledge of developmental stages from pre-K through 12th grade, with an emphasis on early childhood development, arts integration, local and national standards, and the application of learning theories to museum education.

Ability to work effectively with individuals of all ages. Highly organized, with the ability to multitask, prioritize, and adapt. Flexible and patient, with strong customer service, training, and supervisory skills. Demonstrated creativity and problem-solving ability. Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

Proficiency in Microsoft Suite and Blackbaud Altru preferred.

$50,000 plus benefits
