Position: Warranty Analysis Engineer – HVAC & Engine Systems

Location: Auburn Hills, MI – Onsite

Start Date: Immediate Availability

Role Overview

We are seeking experienced and detail-oriented Warranty Analysis Engineers with strong automotive engineering, failure analysis, and root-cause investigation experience.

The engineer will investigate warranty-returned components, perform teardown and failure analysis, identify root causes, and support corrective and preventive actions. The role involves close collaboration with Product Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing, Supplier Quality, Service Engineering, and Warranty teams to improve product reliability, reduce warranty costs, and resolve recurring field issues.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform detailed analysis and investigation of warranty-returned automotive components.
  • Conduct hands-on component teardown, inspection, measurement, and failure diagnostics.
  • Investigate failures associated with HVAC, engine, powertrain, transmission, driveline, cooling, and exhaust systems.
  • Determine failure modes, mechanisms, root causes, and contributing factors.
  • Perform root-cause analysis using 8D, 5 Why, Fishbone, FMEA, Fault Tree Analysis, and related engineering methodologies.
  • Evaluate components for repairability, rework, replacement, scrap, containment, or No-Fault-Found (NFF) disposition.
  • Review engineering drawings, CAD information, GD&T, material specifications, tolerance stack-ups, and validation/test reports.
  • Analyze warranty claims and field-return data to identify recurring failures and reliability trends.
  • Prepare technical reports, failure summaries, Pareto analyses, and engineering recommendations.
  • Partner with Product Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Supplier Quality, and Service teams to develop corrective and preventive actions.
  • Support supplier investigations, technical reviews, containment activities, and corrective-action verification.
  • Apply automotive quality methodologies including APQP, PPAP, DFMEA, PFMEA, and Control Plans.
  • Identify opportunities for product, process, and quality improvements to reduce warranty costs and improve customer satisfaction.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives using Lean, Six Sigma, and data-driven problem-solving techniques.
Required Qualifications & Skills
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • 5–10 years of relevant automotive engineering experience in warranty analysis, product engineering, quality engineering, failure analysis, or field quality.
  • Strong understanding of automotive mechanical systems and engineering fundamentals.
  • Hands-on experience with component teardown and failure investigation.
  • Experience analyzing HVAC, engine, powertrain, or other automotive systems.
  • Strong knowledge of automotive manufacturing processes, materials, and reliability principles.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, CAD models, GD&T, specifications, and test reports.
  • Strong experience with structured root-cause analysis and problem-solving methodologies.
  • Experience with 8D, 5 Why, Fishbone, FMEA, APQP, PPAP, DFMEA, and PFMEA.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and technical documentation skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, and engineering/warranty data-analysis tools.
  • Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with an automotive OEM or Tier-1 supplier.
  • Experience with vehicle diagnostics and field-data analysis.
  • Familiarity with automotive warranty and quality-management systems.
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or statistical analysis.
  • Exposure to hybrid and electric vehicle powertrain/thermal-management systems.
  • Experience working directly with suppliers on quality and corrective-action activities.
Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is an automotive engineer who combines hands-on failure analysis, warranty investigation, mechanical engineering fundamentals, and strong problem-solving skills. Candidates with backgrounds in Warranty Engineering, Quality Engineering, Failure Analysis, Product Engineering, Field Quality, Reliability Engineering, Powertrain Engineering, or Automotive HVAC Engineering are encouraged to apply.
