Maintenance Technician – Food Manufacturing
Job Summary:
The Maintenance Technician supports plant operations by performing preventive, corrective, and emergency maintenance on food processing and packaging equipment, utilities, and facility systems at Santini Foods, Inc. This role is essential to ensuring the continuous, safe, and efficient production of sauces, evaporated milk, and sweetened condensed milk in a regulated food manufacturing environment.
The Maintenance Technician will troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems, while maintaining compliance with food safety, quality, and safety standards under OSHA, Cal/OSHA, FDA, and GMP guidelines.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform routine, preventive, and emergency maintenance on processing and packaging systems, including mixers, cookers, fillers, evaporators, pumps, homogenizers, and conveyors.
- Troubleshoot, repair, and calibrate mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic components used in food production and utility systems (boilers, air compressors, refrigeration, etc.).
- Inspect and maintain variable frequency drives (VFDs), sensors, control panels, PLCs, and instrumentation used in automated systems.
- Execute maintenance and repairs following standard operating procedures (SOPs) to minimize downtime and ensure product quality and safety.
- Support the installation, modification, and commissioning of new equipment in accordance with engineering specifications and sanitary design standards.
- Maintain accurate maintenance logs, work orders, and parts usage records within the CMMS system.
- Collaborate with the Production, Quality Assurance, and Sanitation teams to coordinate maintenance activities during scheduled downtime.
- Follow proper lockout/tagout (LOTO), confined space, and other safety procedures as required.
- Respond promptly to equipment breakdowns and emergency maintenance requests.
- Assist with Building Management Systems (BMS) and facility control systems monitoring and troubleshooting.
- Participate in root cause analysis (RCA) and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Maintain compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) principles, and food safety standards.
Qualifications and Skills:
Knowledge of:
- Industrial electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic systems used in food manufacturing.
- Preventive maintenance practices for pumps, motors, bearings, valves, and production machinery.
- Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and automation systems.
- Reading blueprints, schematics, P&IDs, and wiring diagrams.
- Safe work practices and compliance with OSHA and Cal/OSHA standards.
- Food manufacturing sanitation and contamination control principles.
Ability to:
- Diagnose and repair equipment issues with minimal supervision.
- Work from wiring diagrams, mechanical drawings, and equipment manuals.
- Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and other departments.
- Prioritize work orders and complete assignments within deadlines.
- Lift and move up to 50 pounds and work at heights or in confined spaces.
- Work independently or collaboratively in a fast-paced production environment.
Education and Experience:
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in industrial maintenance, preferably in the food or beverage manufacturing industry.
- At least 6 months to 1 year experience with digital or PLC-controlled systems required.
- Associate degree or technical/vocational certification in industrial maintenance, mechatronics, electrical systems, or mechanical engineering preferred.
- Equivalent combinations of education and hands-on experience will be considered.
- California Electrical or Instrumentation certification highly desirable.
Special Requirements:
- Must possess a valid California Class C Driver’s License.
- Must be available to work flexible shifts, including weekends, nights, holidays, and overtime as needed.
- Subject to variable working conditions including temperature changes, heights, and potential electrical exposure.
Work Schedule:
- 8-hour or 10-hour shifts, depending on production needs
- Available to work Weekend (Saturday and Sunday)
- Day and/or Night Shifts available
- On-site position
