Internship Overview

This internship provides an opportunity to work alongside experienced engineers, operators, laboratory personnel, and other technical professionals while learning how chemistry and engineering principles are applied to support efficient plant operations and environmental compliance.

  • Internships run from May 17, 2027 - August 6, 2027
    • Interns will work 40 hours per week
What You’ll Do Intern

As a Technical Services Engineering Intern, you may assist with:

  • Assist with monitoring FGD, wastewater treatment, reagent preparation, gypsum dewatering, and other environmental process systems
  • Collect, organize, and analyze process data, laboratory results, operator logs, chemical usage information, and equipment performance data
  • Assist with troubleshooting environmental process and chemistry issues and identifying potential causes and solutions
  • Participate in experiments and testing designed to evaluate and improve process performance
  • Help identify opportunities to improve system reliability, efficiency, and environmental performance
  • Assist with evaluating and updating process procedures and developing recommendations for process improvements
  • Support technical evaluations related to physical, biological, and chemical treatment processes
  • Assist with preparing technical reports, presentations, meeting materials, and other communications
  • Participate in meetings with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Environmental, Laboratory, and other departments
  • Gain exposure to environmental permit requirements and how operating data is used to support regulatory compliance
  • Assist with special engineering, environmental, or process improvement projects
  • Support departmental activities such as material and service procurement, work planning, budget tracking, and procedural updates
  • Follow all plant safety requirements and procedures while working in laboratory, office, and generating station environments.

What You’ll Learn

  • How Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) systems operate and help control emissions from coal-fired generation
  • How reagent preparation systems support the FGD process
  • How gypsum is produced and dewatered as part of the FGD process
  • How industrial wastewater is collected, treated, monitored, and managed
  • How physical, biological, and chemical processes are used in environmental treatment systems
  • How laboratory data, operator logs, chemical usage, and operating data are analyzed to evaluate process performance
  • How engineers and technical professionals troubleshoot complex environmental chemistry and process issues
  • How experiments, data collection, and analysis are used to identify root causes and develop solutions
  • How process optimization can improve efficiency, reliability, chemical usage, and environmental performance
  • How environmental permit requirements influence generating station operations
  • How engineers communicate technical findings and recommendations through reports, presentations, meetings, and other documentation
  • How Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Environmental, and Laboratory teams work together to maintain safe, reliable, and environmentally responsible generating station operations

What We’re Looking For

Qualified Candidates Must

  • Be pursuing a degree in Engineering degree from an EAC/ABET accredited college/ university
  • Have completed their first year at a 2-year college/university (transfer program) or 4-year college/university
  • Be enrolled as a full-time student Fall 2027
  • Successfully undergo pre-employment physical and drug screen if selected for this position

Compensation Information:

Rising Sophomore: $23.00 per hour

Rising Junior: $24.00 per hour

Rising Senior: $25.00 per hour
