SYVCS Instructional Aide Position

School Year 23-24 (August 15 to June 2)

SUPERVISOR: Executive Director

GENERAL SCOPE

Assists a certificated teacher in providing instruction to individual or small groups of students; assists with the after-school program; prepares materials; performs clerical duties in support of the classroom activities and performs playground supervision as assigned by the Director. This is a part-time job with a maximum of 5 hours per day. The times available are either 8:00 - 12:45 or 11:30 - 3:30 M-F. Some flexibility is possible.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists in the instruction of individuals or small groups of students, reinforcing lessons and instruction provided by the teacher; assists in planning and arranging field trips and special activities
  • Performs playground supervision as assigned and directed by the Director
  • Assists with the after-school program or after-school tutoring
  • Assists with PE classes as needed
  • Monitors and reports behavior of students according to approved procedures; reports progress regarding student performance and behavior; assists in the development of appropriate social behavior using positive reinforcement techniques
  • Performs routine clerical duties such as preparation of instructional and classroom materials; operates office equipment; assists in the maintenance of student records and files; distributes and accounts for textbooks, supplies and equipment
  • Collects, assembles, catalogs and distributes resource materials as assigned; distributes and assists in the accounting for textbooks, supplies and equipment
  • Provides support to the teacher by setting up work areas, bulletin boards, displays and exhibits, operating audio-visual equipment, operating educational training and athletic equipment and distributing and collecting papers and supplies
  • Assists students by providing proper examples, emotional support, a friendly attitude and general guidance; assists in student activities such as drills, exercises and practices
  • Confers, as needed, with teachers concerning programs and materials to meet student needs
  • Assures the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and regulations; maintains student work areas in a neat and orderly manner
  • Directs group activities of students as assigned; assists in monitoring classroom, lunchroom and playground activities
  • Participates in meetings and in-service training programs as assigned, attends meetings related to curriculum content and student-related concerns and issues
  • Perform related duties as assigned

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Basic subjects taught, including arithmetic, spelling, language and reading
  • Basic instructional methods and techniques
  • Classroom procedures and appropriate student conduct
  • Child guidance principles and practices
  • Safe practices in classroom and playground activities
  • Proper use and care of educational and athletic equipment
  • Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy
  • Basic record keeping techniques

ABILITY TO:

  • Reinforce instruction as directed by the teacher
  • Communicate and maintain effective relationships with students, parents, staff
  • Work confidently with discretion
  • Perform routine clerical duties in support of classroom activities
  • Print and write legibly
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Learn, apply and explain policies and procedures related to school and program activities
  • Monitor, observe and report students’ behavior according to approved policies and procedures
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Lift and carry up to 10 lbs.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Education equivalent to completion of twelfth grade and previous experience working with children in an organized setting.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $18.00 - $21.00 per hour
