**Building Inspector III**
**Part-Time Non-Exempt**
**GENERAL PURPOSE**
Inspect residential and/or commercial construction activities, individual property sites, and business activity uses for Santa Clara City. Inspect buildings and properties within the city for compliance in accordance with
adopted city and state buildings and zoning codes.
**SUPERVISION RECEIVED**
Works under the general supervision of the Building Official.
**SUPERVISION EXERCISED**
None.
**ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS**
Building Inspection: Inspects residential and/or commercial buildings or structures for adherence to structural safety, fire safety, building, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, zoning, and related codes, regulations, and requirements, including site development, storm water management and floodplain regulations. On request of fire or utility departments, this position may be required to inspect for damaged systems or structures to ensure safety for occupants.
Reads and interprets adopted building, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical codes, technical manuals, drawings, instructions, specifications as related to construction projects; clearly notifies contractor of code
violations with written compliance report at the time of inspection.
Reviews building permit applications and required construction documents for completeness and code compliance.
Issues correction notices, violation red tags, and stop work orders for work being done contrary to code provisions or approved plans.
Consults or corresponds with architects, engineers, building owners and contractors concerning questions about building and related codes and regulations.
Investigates alleged violations of city ordinance and advises landowners/applicants of necessary corrective measures; keeps an inventory of said violations including dated photographs and/or other evidence.
Prepares code enforcement documents for legal action when mediating non-compliant nuisance/abatement
cases.
Performs Other Related Duties As Required.
**Typical Physical/Mental Demands/Working Conditions:**
Physical discomfort when on construction or building inspections. Exposure to heat, dust, noise, and power equipment. Intermittent exposure to stress as a result of human behavior.
**MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS**
Education And Experience
Five (5) years of responsible experience performing above or related duties.

An equivalent combination of education and exper

Building Inspector III
Considerable knowledge of construction methods and materials common to commercial, industrial and residential construction projects; basic engineering standards and codes; political, legal and governmental processes affecting various building programs and project management; building, plumbing, electrical, mechanical and energy conservation codes; modern construction methods, practices, materials, tools and equipment; basic drafting techniques, blu prints and related specifications; interpersonal communication skills.
Considerable Skill in the art of diplomacy and cooperative problem solving.
Ability to interpret codes accurately and effectively; analyze permanent structures to determine conformity of established codes; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; read and interpret plans and specifications; visualize completed projects in planning stages and estimate the end results; estimate quantity of materials accurately; perform advanced mathematical calculations; develop and maintain effective working relationships with elected officials, federal agencies, state agencies, local governments, subordinates, and the public
Work Environment
Tasks require a variety of physical activities not generally involving muscular strain. Physical activity and demands are frequently related to walking, standing, stooping, climbing, sitting, and reaching. Talking, hearing and seeing or other effective communication is essential to job performance. Mental application utilizes memory for details, emotional stability and discriminating thinking common to most job functions. Frequent travel required while performing portions of job functions.

Education And Experience
- Graduation from high school, plus, two (2) years of specialized training in building methods and practices related to commercial, industrial and residential structures provided through technical college, professional workshops or university studies.
Five (5) years of responsible experience performing above or related duties.
OR
An equivalent combination of education and exper
ience.
- Must have a valid driver's license. A valid Utah Driver's License must be obtained and maintained throughout employment.
Building Inspector III
- Must be an ICC certified residential and commercial (building, plumbing, electrical, mechanical) inspector, and must possess a state license for combination inspector.
- Experience with residential and commercial plan review.
