Founded in 1976, Santa Barbara Middle School (SBMS) is a co-educational independent school serving approximately 165 students in grades 6–9. Our program is guided by The Diamond, our distinctive educational philosophy emphasizing excellence in Academics, Creative Arts & Sports, Outdoor Education, and Community Involvement.
SBMS provides students with a rigorous and engaging academic experience while fostering leadership, creativity, resilience, and compassion. Our small-school environment allows faculty to build strong relationships with students and support the development of confident, curious learners prepared for the challenges of high school and beyond.

Position Overview:
Santa Barbara Middle School (SBMS) is seeking a passionate and collaborative math teacher to join our team. This is an exciting opportunity to teach in our unique “untethered” math program, where students are placed by proficiency rather than grade level.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Math or a related field
- Clear Single Subject Teaching Credential in Math or relevant advanced degree
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Math or education
- Experience teaching middle school or early high school students
- Experience designing experiential or interdisciplinary learning
- Interest in outdoor education or experiential learning programs
- Ability to teach advanced or honors-level Math
Successful candidates will also demonstrate:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent organization and classroom management
- A collaborative and collegial approach to teaching
- A positive, flexible, and solution-oriented mindset
Beyond the Classroom
Faculty actively participate in:
- Weekly meetings, professional development, and community events.
- Teaching electives based on personal interests.
- Outdoor Education Program (approx. 20 nights/year) involving kayaking, mountain biking, hiking, and camping.
Salary Range: $70,000 – $95,000 annually depending on experience and credentials.
