PURPOSE:
This position is accountable for the operation of the Department's highway maintenance trucks used to plow snow and haul various road maintenance materials, as well as the operation and daily maintenance of light equipment, and hand labor required on various highway maintenance work crews.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
The incumbent reports on a permanent basis to the Manager, Maintenance Scheduling but may be assigned on a daily basis to a Crew Chief or Foreman.
ACTIVITIES:
The incumbent is responsible for hauling materials used in maintaining the road system in Sangamon County. The incumbent picks up materials from the central maintenance yard, stockpiles, or various suppliers and transports said materials to a maintenance work crew. Prompt delivery is required to assure road repair crews have materials required to obtain optimum work production. The incumbent requires the ability to work without close supervision.
The incumbent is also accountable for operating various light equipment used to maintain the roadways including but not limited to tractor/mowers, rollers, road brooms, brush chipper, air compressor, tar kettle, skid steer loader, bucket truck and all other equipment that is not specifically determined to require an Operator.
Job duties of this position will include hand labor tasks including but not limited to hand patching, flagging traffic, brush cutting, junking, painting and repairing guardrail, bridge deck cleaning, cleaning buildings and grounds, cleaning culverts, mowing, cleaning and washing equipment and any other task that may be assigned by a Crew Chief, Foreman or Manager.
During the winter months, the incumbent may be assigned a snow route. If a snow route is assigned, the incumbent may be required to operate a highway maintenance truck equipped with a snow plow. During the winter months, the position requires the incumbent to be on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week to facilitate the prime objective of keeping the County Highway System open to vehicular traffic and free of ice and snow. The incumbent may be required to spend long hours operating snow removal equipment when combating winter weather conditions.
REQUIRED POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
1. The incumbent shall possess a valid Class A or B commercial driver’s license.
2. The incumbent should have prior experience in the operation of a tandem axle dump truck.
3. The incumbent should have experience in the operation of a highway maintenance truck with a snow plow for removing snow and ice from roads, streets, or highways.
4. The incumbent shall be capable of operating light equipment as so defined in the "Activities" section of this position description.
COMMUNICATIONS:
The incumbent receives direction from his immediate supervisor and must get along with fellow workers. When acting as a flagman on maintenance projects, basic procedure must be followed to communicate effectively with the motorists who pass through the work site.
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
1. Operate the County's highway maintenance trucks and light equipment in a safe and timely manner. This includes a prestart check before use and daily maintenance of vehicles or equipment.
2. Assure that the assigned hand tools and shop equipment are properly used and maintained.
3. Assist with hand labor operations as assigned.
4. Be able to accomplish assigned tasks on an individual basis without close supervision.
5. Perform any other duties as may be assigned by Field Manager of Maintenance Operations.
