| POSITION SUMMARY |
|
The Middle School Athletic Director is responsible for the coordination, organization, and oversight of the school’s interscholastic and intramural athletic programs. This role ensures that all athletic opportunities are developmentally appropriate, educationally sound, and aligned with division expectations for middle school athletics.
The Athletic Director supports student-athlete development by promoting participation, sportsmanship, skill development, and positive school culture. The role aligns with best practices from the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) and supports vertical alignment with VHSL programs at the high school level where applicable.
The Middle School Athletic Director promotes safe participation, equitable access, and effective program management while representing the school and division in a professional and collaborative manner.

| ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS |
|
Program Leadership & Coordination
- Organize and oversee all middle school athletic programs, including interscholastic and intramural activities
- Develop and maintain seasonal schedules, practice times, and facility usage plans
- Coordinate game schedules with other schools and ensure appropriate staffing for events
- Support alignment of middle school programs with high school athletic expectations and feeder patterns
- Promote student participation and inclusive access to athletic opportunities
Coaching Support & Oversight
- Coordinate assignment of coaches in collaboration with administration
- Provide guidance and support to coaches regarding expectations, procedures, and best practices
- Ensure coaches understand and follow division policies, safety protocols, and student supervision expectations
- Facilitate communication between coaches, administration, and families
- Support professional growth and development opportunities for coaches
Student-Athlete Development & Supervision
- Promote positive sportsmanship, teamwork, and character development
- Ensure appropriate supervision of student-athletes during practices and contests
- Support eligibility verification and academic expectations in collaboration with school staff
- Address student concerns, conflicts, or behavioral issues in alignment with school policies
- Promote equitable participation and developmentally appropriate competition
Compliance & Safety
- Ensure compliance with division policies, risk management procedures, and student safety protocols
- Support implementation of concussion protocols, emergency action plans, and injury reporting procedures
- Ensure all required documentation is completed (physicals, consent forms, eligibility forms, etc.)
- Coordinate with school personnel to ensure proper supervision and safety at all events
- Maintain awareness of VHSL guidelines for feeder program alignment where applicable
Event & Game Management
- Oversee home athletic events, including scheduling, supervision, and logistics
- Coordinate officials, transportation, and event staffing as needed
- Ensure proper setup, supervision, and closing procedures for all athletic events
- Address any issues related to event operations, sportsmanship, or safety
- Maintain a positive and structured game-day environment
Communication & Collaboration
- Communicate effectively with students, parents, coaches, and school administration
- Coordinate schedules, updates, and program expectations with stakeholders
- Collaborate with high school athletic directors to support program alignment
- Promote athletic programs through school communication channels
- Maintain consistent communication regarding schedules, changes, and expectation
Program Management & Documentation
- Maintain accurate records of schedules, rosters, and program participation
- Support tracking of stipends, coaching assignments, and required documentation
- Assist with inventory and management of athletic equipment and uniforms
- Ensure proper documentation of incidents, injuries, and event reports
- Support adherence to budget and purchasing procedures as assigned

| EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE |
Required
- Bachelor’s degree
- Valid teaching license
- Experience working with middle school students in athletics or extracurricular programs
- Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills
- Ability to work evenings and extended hours for athletic events
Preferred
- Experience coaching or coordinating school-based athletic programs
- Knowledge of NIAAA best practices, VHSL alignment expectations, and VDOE guidelines
- Experience in scheduling, event management, or athletic administration

- Oversight of athletic coaches and program operations at the school level
- Direct supervision of student-athletes during events and activities
- Coordination of coaching assignments in collaboration with administration
- Evaluate coaching staff with Principal

| TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS |
- Travel is required for attendance at scheduled engagement activities and athletic events
- Occasional travel outside of the regular school day may be required to meet activity expectations
