JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: Under general supervision, performs environmental health and sanitation inspections on various premises, facilities, and environmental health systems to ensure and enforce compliance with existing applicable health standards, codes, regulations and laws; performs environmental testing; uses computers and computer systems (including hardware and software) to set up functions, enter data, and/or process information. Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR EMPLOYMENT: An example of acceptable qualifications: Completion of undergraduate degree at an accredited college or university in environmental science, or related science including at least 45 quarter or 30 semester units of science; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.

LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Must be a registered sanitarian-in-training licensed by the State Board of Sanitarian Registration in accordance with O.R.C. Chapter 4736; must possess and maintain a valid State of Ohio driver’s license; must maintain insurability according to Health District policy.

Performs environmental health and sanitation inspections on various assigned premises, facilities, and environmental health systems (e.g., food service operations; home sewage disposal systems; parks and campgrounds; public pools, spas, and beaches; schools; manufactured home parks; solid waste disposal; private water supplies; public health nuisances; rabies control; tattoo and body piercing establishments; etc.) to ensure and enforce compliance with existing applicable health standards, codes, regulations, and laws; performs routine environmental testing to determine non-compliance with unsanitary abatement standards and applies agency’s standardized methodology to enforce state and local laws and regulations for abatement of unsanitary conditions; initiates enforcement activities; maintains files and records of inspections and consultations.

Communicates results of inspection including public health implications, provides consultation on environmental matters and compliance methods, and issues reports and orders as necessary to owners, operators, and contractors; signs permit, and permit applications. Uses computers and computer systems (including hardware and software) to set up functions, enter data, and/or process information.
