What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking a Year Round - R&D Graduate Intern to join the dynamic team!

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Work collaboratively with other students and senior engineers
  • Contribute to the development of marine energy software
  • Contribute to the development of wave energy converter modeling tools
  • Validate simulations and modeling software with high fidelity datasets
  • Help teams simulate and analyze specific wave energy converter designs
  • Generate reports and documentation to present work or to advise marine hydrokinetic research
  • Have the opportunity to work at Sandia National Laboratories on site during the summer if appropriate for this Hybrid/Remote position.
  • Some travel (only a few times/year) may be required to meet team members for project needs

The selected applicant can be a remote worker located in any U.S. State or District of Columbia. Regular or periodic travel to your assigned work location may be required.

Salary Range

At Sandia, we value the important work done by our interns and its contribution to National Security. Because of this, our interns earn competitive pay rates. Our pay structure is based on earned credit hours, classification, and degree level. Your pay rate will be determined during the hire process and included in your offer package. Qualifications We Require

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

  • Earned bachelor's degree
  • Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
  • Ability to work up to 30 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
  • Ability to secure and maintatin a U.S. security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience in one or more of the following programming languages (e.g., MATLAB, Simulink, Python, Julia)
  • Experience with research and/or data analysis (e.g., research assistant, demonstrated analysis projects)
  • Experience in or desire to dive deeply into simulation tools and modeling software, specifically Wave Energy Converter Simulator (WEC-Sim), or other wave energy converter modeling tools (e.g. Capytaine, WAMIT, Aqwa, OrcaFlex)
  • Experience in kinematics, fluid dynamics, computational fluid dynamics, statistics, physics, ocean engineering, system dynamics modeling, optimization, or marine energy systems.
  • Actively working on an advanced degree in engineering, math, statistics, physics, or similar STEM field.

The Hydrodynamic Energy Systems (HES) department develops technologies that harness energy from waves, currents, tides and ocean thermal gradients to generate energy for power and national security applications. We apply capabilities and expertise in mechanical, electrical, civil and controls engineering, as well as robotics, materials and data science, and high-fidelity modeling to create novel energy conversion devices and to characterize hydrodynamic resources. Our work focuses on advancing marine energy and hydropower technologies to support national energy security objectives.

Security Clearance

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

NNSA Requirements For MedPEDs

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
