Job Summary
Sanders Repair Services is seeking an Assistant Shop Manager to support daily operations in our trailer repair facility specializing in liquid transportation trailers with an anticipated expansion to general diesel repairs. This role combines floor supervision, technician coordination, inventory support, and hands-on mechanical work when needed to maintain workflow and quality standards.
The Assistant Shop Manager works closely with technicians and management to ensure repairs are completed efficiently, safely, and in compliance with DOT and company standards. This position requires strong leadership ability, mechanical knowledge of trailer systems, and the ability to coordinate multiple repair tasks across the shop floor.
The ideal candidate demonstrates strong problem-solving skills, clear communication with technicians, and the ability to maintain high standards of workmanship while supporting team productivity.
This position is intended as a full-time leadership role within the shop environment.
Essential Job Functions
Shop Operations & Technician Supervision:
- Oversee day-to-day shop floor activity to ensure technicians are working efficiently and safely.
- Assist in assigning work orders and coordinating repair tasks among technicians based on priority, skill level, and workload.
- Monitor repair progress to ensure jobs remain on schedule and meet company quality standards.
- Provide guidance and technical support to technicians when troubleshooting complex mechanical issues.
- Assist management in maintaining shop organization, workflow efficiency, and adherence to operational procedures.
- Support training and mentorship of junior technicians to improve skills and consistency in repair practices.
- Maintain professional communication with technicians to ensure expectations, deadlines, and priorities are clearly understood.
Quality Control & Technical Support:
- Review completed repairs to ensure work meets Sanders Repair Services quality standards.
- Assist technicians in diagnosing and resolving mechanical issues involving trailer braking systems, suspension components, electrical systems, and structural components.
- Provide hands-on assistance with repairs when necessary to maintain workflow and support technicians during complex jobs.
- Ensure repairs and maintenance work comply with DOT regulations, safety standards, and manufacturer specifications.
- Assist with verifying inspections, maintenance records, and work orders for accuracy and completeness.
Parts, Inventory & Shop Support:
- Assist with ordering parts, tools, and shop supplies needed for ongoing repair work.
- Help maintain organized inventory of parts, components, and consumables to prevent shortages or delays.
- Track parts usage and communicate inventory needs to management.
- Ensure shop equipment and tools are properly maintained, stored, and available for technicians.
- Assist with receiving, labeling, and organizing incoming parts and materials.
Shop Floor Coordination:
- Help coordinate daily shop workflow between technicians, service writers, and management.
- Ensure technicians have the necessary parts, tools, and information needed to complete assigned repairs.
- Assist in managing workload during high-volume periods to maintain productivity.
- Support communication between management and technicians regarding repair priorities and operational needs.
Safety & Compliance:
- Ensure technicians follow all DOT, OSHA, and company safety protocols while performing repairs.
- Promote proper use of PPE, lockout/tagout procedures, and safe handling of hazardous materials.
- Assist with maintaining a clean, organized, and safe shop environment.
- Report safety concerns, hazards, or incidents to management immediately.
- Participate in safety meetings, training programs, and technical development opportunities.
Qualifications
Required:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Strong working knowledge of trailer repair systems including brakes, suspension, electrical components, and structural components.
- Previous experience in heavy-duty trailer repair or diesel mechanical work.
- Ability to supervise and coordinate technicians while maintaining a productive shop environment.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to provide clear direction to technicians.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to high-quality repair work.
- Ability to read and interpret service manuals, repair diagrams, and technical documentation.
- Basic computer skills for work order documentation and communication.
Preferred:
- 3 years of experience in trailer repair or heavy-duty mechanical work.
- Previous experience in a shop leadership, foreman, or supervisory role.
- Experience with DOT inspection standards and compliance requirements.
- Welding or fabrication experience for trailer structural repairs.
- Experience with inventory tracking or parts ordering.
- Proficiency with Outlook and service management software.
- Associate degree in Diesel Technology, Heavy Equipment Technology, or a related mechanical field, or equivalent industry certifications and hands-on experience.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand, walk, kneel, crouch, and climb ladders for extended periods.
- Manual dexterity to handle tools, fasten small parts, and manipulate electrical wiring.
- Steady hands and coordination for precise mechanical work.
- Strong visual acuity and color recognition for working with electrical systems and diagnosing issues.
- Hearing ability to differentiate mechanical sounds and detect unusual noises in trailer components.
- Ability to work in various environments, including hot, cold, wet, and noisy conditions.
Work Environment:
- Work is performed in a shop, industrial yard, and outdoor settings.
- Exposure to various weather conditions, dust, grease, chemicals, and loud equipment.
- Required to follow strict safety protocols when working with hazardous materials, heavy machinery, and electrical systems.
- Collaboration with technicians, coordinators, and managers to ensure efficient workflow.
