What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sergeant position at San Manuel Band of Mission Indians?
Under the direction of the Lieutenants, the Sergeant is a uniformed and armed position with supervisory responsibility over all Public Safety Corporals, Officers, Public Safety Assistants, and Public Safety Cadets on his/her assigned shift. In the absence of the Lieutenant, the Sergeant may be assigned to assume the Watch Commander’s responsibilities. Work involves direct supervision of all Public Safety personnel on the shift. The Sergeant will oversee and direct Corporals, Officers, trainees, PSA’s (Public Safety Assistants) and Cadets; assigning tasks, analyzing and evaluating reports, and participating in officer training programs. Conducts criminal as well as administrative investigations and prepares reports for presentation to the prosecutor, the courts, and Tribal entities. Ensures that all personnel assigned to their shift follow the policies of the San Manuel Department of Public Safety.The Sergeant can be assigned to any Division within the Department of Public Safety and must be adept to working in any of them. The Divisions include, but are not limited to Patrol, Facilities, Training, Administration, PSA/Cadet, and Security Services. The Sergeant shall oversee the development and performance of their assigned staff. The Sergeant shall set an example for their personnel to follow. They should strive to be a model of integrity and ethical behavior in both their personal activities and their work conduct. Responsible for overseeing and protecting Tribal Citizens and the assets of the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians. Provides for the safety and security of the employees, patrons, guests, visitors and property of the San Manuel Casino and the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Establishes work schedules and assignments, reviews work while in progress and checks completed work through visual observation and reports to assure that proper protection is provided. Coordinates with oncoming supervisor on activities occurring and administrative directions issued during previous shift. Read special orders and instructions at briefings, and passes on information to next shift.
- Inspects personnel and equipment for adherence to departmental standards. Applies departmental rules and regulations as supervisor of other officers. Completes introductory and annual performance evaluations for subordinate officers.
- Reviews and coordinates information gathered to insure proper reporting and case classification.
- Monitors an assigned area or function, observing, supervising, and instructing subordinates. Assists other officers on major calls or complex situations where assistance is required.
- Maintains care and control of authorized equipment and vehicles, including firearms. Decides when emergency response is necessary.
- Assigns, instructs, and reviews the work of subordinates in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.
- Other responsibilities, duties, tasks and assignments that contribute to the mitigation or response to the COVID-19 public health emergency.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the efficient operation of the department.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervises the work of others to include planning, assigning, directing, training, and evaluating the work of subordinates.
Education/Experience/Qualifications
- High school diploma or general education development (GED) required.
- Associates Degree or higher preferred.
- Law enforcement, military police, or correctional experience preferred.
- Positions in this class require that at the time of appointment the selected candidate must take and pass a drug-screening test approved by the Human Resources Department.
- Successfully complete a 90-day introductory period.
- Knowledge of the principles of law enforcement and security work.
- Knowledge of interviewing and interrogation techniques.
- Ability to qualify with duty weapon as prescribed by the Department of Public Safety.
- Ability to use and care for Public Safety equipment, including firearms and motor vehicles.
- Maintain an acceptable level of physical condition.
- Must possess a working knowledge of Word, Excel, and Power Point.
- Knowledge of CCTV and access control systems is desired.
- Ability to interact with a variety of individuals to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to evaluate the relative importance of all information received.
- Ability to remain calm under stressful conditions.
- Ability to comply with BSIS rules and regulations.
- Ability to acquire, or already have knowledge of departmental rules, regulations, pertinent ordinances, and laws.
- Ability to acquire, or already have knowledge of the physical location assigned, including buildings, streets, and areas where attention may be required.
- Knowledge of first aid and skill in its application.
- Knowledge of criminal investigation techniques.
- Knowledge of the laws governing search and seizure.
- Knowledge of the principles of supervision.
- Work independently with or without detailed supervision.
- Knowledge of general law enforcement procedures.
- Ability to deal with the public courteously and firmly, and to establish and maintain effective public relations.

Certificates/Licenses/Registrations
- At the discretion of the San Manuel Tribal Gaming Commission you may be required to obtain and maintain a gaming license.
- A qualified candidate/employee must have a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record as determined by the company’s insurance carrier.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a valid BSIS Gun and Guard Card.
- Must comply with all current requirements set forth by the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) for Armed Security Officers within 90 days of employment.
- Post basic or level II certificate.
