Schedule:

Typically Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm; occasional weekends and evenings may be required

When covering ESUHSD route, the schedule is 5:30am-2:00pm

Location:

This position is 100% in-person, located at 1534 Berger Dr. Some presence may be required at our other location at 2650 Senter Road.

 

 

About the San Jose Conservation Corps (SJCC CS):

One of the first urban conservation corps in the country, the San Jose Conservation Corps Charter School was founded in 1987 to empower young adults aged 18 to 27 ("Corpsmembers") to upskill themselves and advance their career in conservation and green spaces. Today, SJCC CS continues to operate its 1-year-long paid workforce development program, while also functioning as a WASC-accredited charter high school, allowing those who have aged out of the traditional education system to earn their high school diploma.

Position Summary:

The Commercial Driver will be responsible for collecting landfill, green waste and/or paper and cardboard from different routes on a daily basis and bringing it to a transfer station. They will need to properly keep track of the material that is collected and be able to generate monthly reports on this material. Upon completion of the route, the driver is responsible for cleaning and maintaining the truck at all times, and training Corpsmembers on all of the above. This position may also act as a Zero Waste Supervisor when necessary.

 

Job Duties:

Driving & Routes

  • Drive and operate the Zero Waste commercial fleet, including front-end loader trucks;
  • Complete recycling routes daily, with the aim of achieving a 75% diversion rate for East Side Union HS District schools; 
  • Enter and maintain detailed records and documentation; 
  • Train corpsmembers on internal database systems; 
  • Oversee the maintenance of an assigned truck; 
  • Relay truck maintenance issues to management and assigned mechanic; 
  • Dispose of materials collected at recycling and transfer stations; 
  • Upholding USDOT Motor Carrier Program standards and requirements;  
  • Ability to assist in other Zero Waste operations as needed and requested by management;
  • Administer behind-the-wheel exams for new company drivers;
  • Assists the Zero Waste Department and Leads with prepping residential flyers;
  • Assists with residential routes for Waste Collection; 
  • Completes SJCC residential and business flyering and pick ups; 
  • Completes SJCC Waste Collection routes; 
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Partnerships & External Relations

  • Builds and maintains relationships with staff at East Side Union HS District schools;  
  • Maintains relationships with staff at recycling and transfer stations;  
  • Serves as an effective ambassador, builds connections, and maintains relationships with outside constituents

 

General Zero Waste Operations

  • Coordinates with haulers for on-site waste pick ups; 
  • Tracks waste collection data for residential, business, and/or different events;
  • Works with Zero Waste Coordinators and Supervisors to provide quarterly collection totals of different types of waste material; 
  • Assists the Zero Waste Department in warehouse management and supervision.
  • SJCC Zero Waste Saturday Events and Partner Events
    • Gathers and reports all waste material data collected on event days;
    • Offers warehouse organization and management assistance to E-Waste Coordinator and Crew Lead to ensure all event material is organized

 

Leadership & Mentorship

  • As needed, supervise and lead the day-to-day engagement of corpsmembers in project work;
  • Facilitate intentional discussions and informal lessons to contribute to the corpsmembers’ personal growth
  • and group dynamics;
  • Promote individual corpsmember development and a healthy, supportive community;
  • Follow and enforce all SJCC CS policies, maintain professional boundaries, and appropriately represent the Corps.

 

Safety & Risk Management

  • Monitor and support the corpsmembers' physical and emotional safety during work hours, while implementing any work project; 
  • Ensure corpsmembers are wearing proper uniforms and appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE); 
  • Exhibit strong situational awareness & promote a culture of safety; 
  • Conduct Fleetio inspection daily, report any maintenance needs or damage to management.
  • Transport corpsmembers and equipment safely in SJCC vans or large vehicles;
  • Follow SJCC COVID-19 Mitigation protocol and ensure corpsmembers do the same;
  • Conduct daily inspections, cleanouts, and maintenance of vehicles; 
  • Regularly review the Corpsmember Handbook and maintain familiarity with all policies;
  • Report incidents to management immediately and appropriately.

 

Administration & Team Communication

  • Participate in weekly Zero Waste Staff and E-Waste Team meetings and other convenings as requested, coming prepared to report on key updates and personal progress; 
  • Complete LinkedIn and other soft-skill training; come prepared to participate in discussion hour; 
  • Complete attendance tracking, daily and weekly reports, corpsmember evaluations, disciplinary action forms, incident reports, etc., and submit in a timely and highly detailed manner; 
  • Track all project-related outcomes and deliverables, such as collection weights and quantities; 
  • Contribute to an organized and high-performing workplace.

Work Environment & Requirements

Position requires sitting, standing, balancing or walking on uneven and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, climbing, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, reaching overhead and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment, plus the ability to speak and to hear. The ability to lift, carry, push and pull tools, equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds is required. The incumbent in this position works outdoors in all weather conditions, including wet, hot, and cold. In the course of work the incumbent may be exposed to biologic/infectious agents, unpleasant odors, fumes, smoke, dust and air contaminants, and insects. The nature of the work may also require the incumbent to use power and noise producing tools and equipment, drive motorized vehicles, work near moving equipment, vehicles or machinery, work on ladders or scaffolding or at heights. The incumbent may be required to use protective clothing, equipment, or devices, and may work near hostile or offensive individuals. May be exposed to biohazards and/or hazardous chemicals. The nature of the work requires that the incumbent to use power and noise producing tools and equipment and drive motorized vehicles, commonly subjecting the incumbent to vibration. Employment At-Will

The San Jose Conservation Corps Charter School is an “At-Will” employer. This means that employment with SJCC CS is voluntarily entered into and staff members are free to resign at any time.  Similarly, SJCC CS may terminate the employment relationship at any time, with or without cause or prior notice, as it deems appropriate.   This at-will employment relationship can be changed only in a written agreement signed by the staff member and the Executive Director of SJCC CS.

 

**SJCC CS IS A MANDATORY COVID-19 VACCINATION EMPLOYER**

All new hires will be required to provide proof of vaccination absent an approved medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. If a new hire is in the process of being vaccinated, their start date may be adjusted to a future date after they have been vaccinated.  Fully vaccinated means at it has been at least two weeks since the person has completed the entire recommended initial series of a COVID-19 vaccine.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school Diploma or GED
  • Driver’s License (Class A or B) with airbrake endorsement at the time of hire
  • Minimum 1 year of supervisory experience
  • Minimum of 2 years driving experience
  • Strong ability to maintain detailed records and documentation

 

Driving Record and Requirements: If the position is offered and accepted, candidates must submit a copy of their DMV driver’s record. The candidate also must possess and continue to maintain a valid California Class A or B driver’s license and a clean driving record. The candidate must also undergo a physical exam and drug screen as required by the Department of Transportation in order to operate vehicles that: transport hazardous materials, weigh more than 10,000lbs, transport more than 8 passengers (including the driver).

 

Employment Eligibility: Federal law requires all employees to provide verification of their eligibility to work in the United States. Please be informed that San Jose Conservation Corps Charter School will NOT sponsor, represent, or sign any documents related to visa applications/transfers for H1-B or any other type of visa which requires an employer application.

 

Medical Verification: State law requires all employees working with youth to provide medical verification of negative tuberculosis test results within the last year. Employees will also be required to complete a DOT physical exam, and submit proof of COVID-19 vaccination.

 

Background Check and Fingerprinting: If the position is offered and accepted, candidates will be required to undergo Live Scan Fingerprinting as well as a background check, which includes a state and federal criminal history record check.

 

Drug Screen: If the position is offered and accepted, candidates will be required to undergo and pass a DOT drug screen.
