The Head of Operations will partner with the Deputy Superintendent of Business Services and Operations to deliver operational improvements and strive for excellence in K-12 operations and facilities so that SFUSD’s 9,000 employees and 50,000 students have what they need to focus on teaching and learning.

The Head of Operations will oversee all operational departments, including student enrollment/educational placement, portfolio planning, transportation, student nutrition services, and facilities, including the bond program. As a member of the Superintendent’s Executive Cabinet, and reporting to the Deputy Superintendent of Business Services and Operations, the Head of Operations is expected to lead with integrity and to manage operations and facilities maintenance and capital delivery in a resource-constrained environment.

Essential Duties

The duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to the job code/class and are not intended to be an inclusive or exhaustive list.

As the 0995 Deputy Director of Business Services, you will:

  • Provide leadership, direction, coordination, evaluation, and support to supervised departments to ensure effective and efficient operations.

  • Advise the Board, Superintendent, and Deputy Superintendent on requirements, responsibilities, and fiscal conditions of the supervised departments. Serve as an active member of the Superintendent’s Cabinet, and advise the Superintendent on all operations matters.
  • Develop team members to enable them to reach their potential, focusing on the continuous improvement of the team and organization.
  • Co-lead the design and facilitation of an equity-centered professional learning community for the operations teams to foster continuous improvement and strengthen support for schools.
  • Prepare annual budgets for each aligned department that are congruent with the District’s vision, strategic plan, and priorities; adjust plans and programs to address new and emerging needs.
  • Assist the Deputy Superintendent and staff in analyzing financial and educational issues and developing solutions to problems, ultimately improving daily operations.
  • Represent the District in vendor & union contractual negotiations and commitments.
  • Participate with county, state, and national organizations in staying abreast of school finance and operations reform as it relates to areas of responsibility and other District-related issues.
  • Monitor and review existing and proposed laws and legislation related to affected departments for impact on the District, and advises executive leaders on the same.
  • Build and leverage relationships internally and externally, and serve as a spokesperson and primary District representative for issues related to student assignment, school food, facilities and transportation.

  • Knowledge of urban public school landscapes or relevant local government agencies, including policies, politics, education practices, and funding
  • Well-developed cultural humility, awareness of their own identity, and understanding of internalized, interpersonal, and systemic racism and other forms of oppression
  • Ability to lead a large team during a time of strategic transition, culture change, and emergencies
  • Ability to coordinate and manage complex cross-functional projects with multiple competing priorities or perspectives
  • Ability to manage ambiguity, risk, and changing the direction of projects and strategies
  • Ability to work effectively in high-pressure situations that require sound decision making
  • Ability to act with integrity and candor with stakeholders, and to commit to excellence in project approach and implementation
  • Strong analytic and systems thinking necessary to interpret data to inform goals and strategy, as well as build infrastructure where none exists
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to convey information to a variety of audiences (e.g., large groups, staff meetings, executive briefings, public board meetings, and memos)
  • Excellent interpersonal, leadership, and management skills and high professional standards for work quality
  • Ability to build relationships across all organizational levels and functions, including understanding situational historic and political context
  • Effectiveness in navigating intense political landscapes to ensure forward progress toward District goals and projects
  • Ability to work effectively with racially and ethnically diverse staff, students, and communities, to bring groups together toward common goals
  • Experience in IT the field

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • BA/BS from an accredited institution in a related field

Experience

  • 5 years of equivalent experience in a leadership role(s)
