Position Description

This position is responsible for facilitating the process of transforming a school into a full service community school. The Community School Coordinator works in partnership with the school leadership and governance, and community partners, to assess the school community’s needs and assets, ensure efficient coordination of student and family support services, and support the creation of a learning environment that focuses on student achievement and wellness. The Community Schools Model advanced by NEA includes six pillars of practice (strong and proven curriculum, high quality teaching, inclusive leadership, positive behavior practices, family and community partnerships, community support systems). These pillars are adaptable to the needs of an individual school’s students, staff, families, and community and pay particular attention to creating, supporting, and sustaining a culturally relevant and responsive climate. The Community Schools Coordinator is a full-time position in order to achieve the purposes and goals of the California Community Schools Program.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance for school reform through coordinating the elements of a community school model including coordination and integration, deep and focused partnerships, and access and equity.
  • The five main areas of community school work involve: Coordination, extended learning, community engagement, family engagement, and comprehensive behavioral health/wellness.
  • Work with school administrators, teachers, community-based organizations, parents and students to identify barriers to learning, available resources and gaps, and programming that is community responsive.
  • Assess school community needs and assets, and oversee integration of services and programming for students during regular school year and summer school.
  • Support the integration of non-academic services and school priorities through participation in school site council, school leadership team, coordinated care (CCT) team, and student success team.
  • Evaluate and revise student support systems and build capacity of staff to follow systems that benefit students and families the most.
  • Assist with program evaluation (including data collection, analysis and reporting) in coordination with the Director of Community Schools.
  • Design, develop and coordinate special Community School projects as identified by the Principal, Director of Community Schools, and LEAD Teams.
  • Develop and support school climate conversation, committee, and activities.
  • Manage a calendar of activities that contribute to a positive safe school culture and ensure information sharing and frequent communication.
  • Serve as a constructive “critical friend” to school leadership, teachers and staff as they envision and implement school reform through a community school strategy.
  • Share leadership of the development, implementation and monitoring of the Single Plan for Student Achievement.
  • Facilitate the engagement of all stakeholders (certificated and classified staff, parents and community in school wide reform strategies) and the development expertise in community school strategies.
  • Ensure thoughtful integration of support services, including extended learning, family engagement and support, and health and mental health services.
  • Act as a resource and monitor the alignment to school vision and priorities and work with staff to realize:
    • An effective referral process; facilitate/co-facilitate the coordination of services team, where members review, assign and follow up on referrals, and troubleshoot student and systems issues.
    • Regular providers meeting (at least bi-monthly) as a forum to build strong communication and aligning services with school priorities and student learning goals.
    • Knowledge and communication around the curriculum and academic goals to share with partners and families.
    • Protocols to manage and maintain quality partnerships, including, but not limited to: development of MOUs, facilitation of regular meetings, planning sessions, joint work plans and conflict resolution processes. Partnership Development
  • Support programmatic direction and coordination to on-site SFUSD and community partners’ child and family support service personnel in alignment with the Schools academic and community goals.
  • Develop and sustain partnerships with city and county services and non-profit agencies to provide supports and opportunities to students and families that meet their identified needs.
  • Implement new tools developed by SFUSD CBO Advisory Committee to monitor, support, and collect data on new and existing partnerships; create resource maps; centralize CBO info and provide a guide to how to develop and maintain different levels of partnerships.
  • Work with partners and providers, site leadership and district offices to develop and finalize Board Resolutions for approval of services and finalization of contracts for those services, as appropriate.
  • Develop and oversee innovative summer school opportunities.
  • Assist with resource development, including fundraising.
  • Identify strategic new partnerships with the surrounding community.
  • Develop relationships with local community members, colleges, and businesses.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor degree required.
  • Two years of experience in one or more major student/family support areas, e.g. academic support, mental health, afterschool, youth development, family support or leadership development.


Desired Qualifications

  • Bilingual/biliterate – especially in Spanish and/or Cantonese or Mandarin.
  • Experience in coordination and/or management/administration in an educational, non-profit and/or human services setting.
  • Strong interpersonal and supervisory skills, with a diversely skilled workforce.
  • A high degree of cultural awareness and competency in cross-cultural practice with children and families.
  • Experience in collaboration, meeting facilitation, problem-solving and teambuilding.
  • Experience with school-based service delivery.
  • Ability to multi-task; skills to be a team player and self-starter.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Organizational skills; solid knowledge of Microsoft applications.
  • Ability to work flexible hours (evenings, weekends).
  • Master’s degree in Education, Public Administration, Social Work, or related field.


What We Offer

SFUSD offers a competitive base starting salary in the range of $81,930 - $99,614.
