Community Medicine - Spay/Neuter Registered Veterinary Technician

San Francisco SPCA
San Francisco, CA Full Time
POSTED ON 4/17/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 5/16/2026
Job Type

Full-time

Description

At the San Francisco SPCA, we believe that access to veterinary care should never depend on income or zip code. Our Community Medicine team provides high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter surgeries and preventive care to animals across San Francisco — from beloved family pets to free-roaming community cats.

We’re looking for a Registered Veterinary Technician who is both technically skilled and deeply compassionate — someone who can expertly manage anesthesia, deliver compassionate patient care, and keep calm and curious in a fast-paced, purpose-driven environment.

This is a role for a confident, detail-oriented technician who takes pride in precision, teamwork, and the impact of their work.

What You’ll Do

  • Anesthesia and surgical excellence: Safely induce, intubate, and monitor patients through all stages of anesthesia — often managing multiple cases simultaneously — while recognizing and responding to changes quickly and effectively.
  • Champion surgical prep and recovery: Prepare patients aseptically, assist in surgery, maintain sterile fields, and ensure smooth, safe recoveries.
  • Deliver high-quality nursing care: Place IV catheters, calculate and administer drugs and fluids, and manage patient records accurately.
  • Provide client care and education: Check in clients, discuss preventive service options, deliver clear discharge instructions, and offer compassionate client education to empower pet owners in caring for their animals.
  • Innovate and improve workflows: Identify opportunities to streamline processes, strengthen communication, and elevate the client and patient experience across our clinics.
  • Collaborate and grow: Work closely with veterinarians, veterinary assistants, and volunteers to foster trust, efficiency, and shared learning — with mentorship and continuing education opportunities to advance through the RVT levels.

Requirements

Who You Are

  • A California-licensed RVT (or eligible) with strong skills in anesthesia, monitoring, and surgical preparation.
  • Experienced in high-volume settings and confident balancing technical proficiency with patient empathy.
  • Passionate about community-centered veterinary medicine and equity in access to care.
  • A clear, kind communicator who values collaboration, curiosity, and humor.
  • Someone who thrives in a culture that values both excellence and empathy — where we care for each other as much as our patients.

Why You’ll Love Working Here

  • Be part of a mission-driven, community-rooted department that pairs high-quality medicine with a commitment to accessible care.
  • Join a tight-knit, skilled team that celebrates learning, teamwork, and shared purpose.
  • Enjoy robust benefits including medical, dental, and vision insurance, PTO, retirement plans, student debt relief, and staff discounts on veterinary care.
  • Work in a department that values growth, belonging, and innovation — where your technical expertise helps save lives and strengthen communities every day.

Compensation

The starting salary for this position depends on the depth and breadth of experience. The expected range is $34.00 - 37.00 per hour.
