This Track Worker position is ideal for individuals who take pride in hands-on work, enjoy working outdoors in dynamic environments, and want to build a stable, long-term career maintaining one of the nation’s most visible public transit systems.
In this assignment, the Track Worker serves as a key member of the Track Maintenance team responsible for the inspection, upkeep, and repair of BART’s rail infrastructure throughout the system. This is a critical safety-sensitive role that directly supports BART’s ability to provide safe, reliable service to the Bay Area.
Under general supervision, Track Workers perform a variety of semi-skilled tasks related to track maintenance, repair, and modification. Work is performed in challenging conditions, often during non-revenue hours, requiring strict adherence to safety rules, roadway worker protection requirements, and regulatory standards. Track Workers must demonstrate strong physical capability, situational awareness, and the ability to work effectively as part of a crew under time-sensitive conditions.
Key responsibilities include clearing debris and obstructions from tracks and wayside areas; performing preventive maintenance such as cleaning and lubricating track fastenings and switches; assisting in the removal and replacement of rails, ties, fastenings, switches, and turnouts; and maintaining clean and safe work sites. Successful candidates will bring a strong work ethic, commitment to safety, and the flexibility to work varied schedules, including nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call assignments.

This is a SEIU Local 1021 Bargaining unit position. All full-time SEIU District employees must follow the "Bid Form" process and deposit their bids in the bid box. Failure to comply may invalidate the employee's bid. As actual vacancies occur, District employees on the internal eligibility list will be considered before external candidates.

The selected candidate must demonstrate a work history reflecting reliability and dependability and may be required to provide copies of certificates, diplomas, or other documentation required by law, including proof of authorization to work in the United States, and pass a pre-employment medical examination which includes a drug screen, which is specific to the essential job functions and requirements. Pre-employment processing will also include a background check. This requirement does not apply to current full-time District employees unless the position requires additional evaluations or clearances.
- Receives daily work assignments from shift Foreworker.
- Selects and gathers necessary hand and power tools, equipment and materials from storage, using a dolly or forklift as required.
- Loads and unloads tools and equipment from gang truck or buggies.
- Travels to assigned work sites.
- Cleans and clears debris, weeds, shrubbery, dead animals and other trash and obstructions from track and associated wayside.
- Performs scheduled preventive maintenance such as cleaning and lubricating track fastenings and switches and tightening torque and anchor bolts.
- Installs, removes and replaces track fastenings, concrete and wooden ties, angle bars and joints, switches and rails, including turnouts.
- Assists in resurfacing and realigning tracks, gauges tracks rails as required.
- Reads diagrams and specifications to determine appropriate measurements.
- Cleans up work site after completion of assigned work
- Maintains tools and equipment in a clean and orderly condition
- Reports unusual incidents and the need for additional maintenance or repair to Foreworker
Education:
Possession of a high school diploma, GED, or recognized equivalent.
Experience:
One (1) year of (full time equivalent) verifiable track maintenance experience is preferred.
Other Requirements:
- Must possess a valid California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record.
- Must be physically able to perform strenuous physical labor both indoors/outdoors in all types of weather.
- Must be physically able to lift and carry various shaped material and equipment up to 50 lbs. within 100 yards or more.
- Must be physically able to walk, climb, stoop, bend, crawl, twist, work in confined spaces, work underground, and heights up to 60 ft. and walk on uneven surfaces.
- Must be physically able to climb and work from a ladder.
- Must be physically able to climb into vehicles with steps up to 25’’ from the ground in close clearances.
- Must be able to wear respiratory and fall protective equipment during the performance of assigned duties in accordance with the District Respirator Program and applicable Cal-OSHA requirements and work in dusty work environment subject to various fumes and noise levels in the proximity of live voltage.
- Must be willing to work weekends and off-hours shifts.
- Must be able to understand, read, write, and communicate in English.
Knowledge of:
- Track work and related appurtenances, maintenance procedures, methods, supplies, tools and equipment is preferred.
- Experience in the proper use and care of hand and power tools and equipment is preferred.
- Safe working practices and techniques.
- Using hand tools and power equipment to perform semi-skilled track maintenance and repair work.
- Following oral and written directions.
- Working independently without immediate supervision.
- Working cooperatively with others in a crew.
Salary : $75,597 - $98,820
