San Dieguito River Park - Park Ranger Aide

DEFINITION

The Park Ranger Aide position is an entry-level position intended to be an introduction to Parks and Recreation management. The duties of this position are to work with a team of park rangers to protect, preserve and interpret park areas; assist the visiting public toward appropriate and enjoyable use of parks; work with volunteers; help with the construction and maintenance of trails; perform operational duties including trail rules enforcement, landscape maintenance, facility repair and construction; and perform related work. This position does not require “law enforcement” certification or experience in law enforcement. The Park Ranger Aide position reports to the Senior Supervising Ranger.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Work with other park staff to maintain SDRP trail system;
  • Answer general questions from the public and explain park policies and regulations;
  • Patrol the park and enforce park standards;
  • Maintain records of ranger-related activities and volunteer hours (for reporting to the Park’s Volunteer Coordinator) and prepare reports;
  • Preform minor maintenance and repair work on park vehicles, power tools and equipment, and park facilities.
  • Maintain and implement revegetation projects;
  • Work with other park staff and volunteers to support interpretive programs and training programs;
  • Supervise and back up volunteer patrol;
  • Maintain a visual presence and act as an information source at trailheads, staging areas, and along trails;
  • Perform basic trail and facilities maintenance, including trash pick-up and disposal, as needed;
  • May include leading hikes and preparing and giving presentations, as needed;
  • Cooperate and communicate with Park admin staff and other Park Rangers to minimize duplication of effort and maximize effectiveness;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • The ability and willingness to communicate, cooperate and coordinate with other staff members. Willing and able to take direction from the senior rangers.
  • Good communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Effectively use a wide variety of hand tools and power tools.
  • Operate automotive and other mechanical equipment used in park operations and maintenance.
  • Perform basic and intermediate maintenance on park facilities.
  • Ability to handle correspondence, appointments and other work details without the assistance of a secretary.

LICENSE: A valid California Driver License is required at the time of hire.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Education, training and experience which would demonstrate the application of the knowledge and skills listed above. Must have a High School diploma.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

This position is a full-time position (40 hours per week). Workweek will generally include at least one weekend day. Job entails frequent and extensive walking, climbing, and lifting weighted objects and use of mechanical equipment.

PROMOTION POTENTIAL:

Salary increases and promotions are based on merit as reflected in the employee evaluation. Employee’s performance will be evaluated annually with merit increases to be determined annually. Each new employee is on a probationary status for the next six months.

BENEFITS:

Employee’s will earn vacation, sick leave and holidays according to the schedule shown in the office manual. Group Health, State Disability, Workers Compensation, Life Insurance and Unemployment Insurance benefits are provided for eligible permanent employees. Retirement benefits are received through the County Employees Retirement Association.
