The School Counselor Pool is for assignments for the 2026-2027 school year. If you are currently in the 2025-2026 School Counselor eligibility pool, you must submit a completed application to be considered for a position in the 2026-2027 school year.

 

OVERVIEW:

San Diego Unified School District, the second largest district in California and one of the top largest urban school districts in the United States, is looking for School Counselors who care deeply for students and are committed to the communities in which they serve.

POSITION SPECIFICS:

The School Counselor Pool is for assignments for the 2026-2027 school year. 

The San Diego Unified School District accepts applications for School Counselors on a continuous basis for regular full-time, part-time, and temporary assignments. The School Counselor Pool is for individuals who hold a Pupil Personnel Services credential in counseling or who are attaining a Pupil Personnel Services credential in counseling through a credentialing program. Counselors may be itinerant, which means they may be assigned to one or more sites to serve students.

 

This is a continuous recruitment which will be used to establish an ongoing eligibility list.  

  

Examples of Duties:

The duties of a School Counselor include but are not limited to the following:

  • Develop, plan, implement, and evaluate a school counseling and guidance program that includes academic, career, personal, and social development.

  • Advocate for the high academic achievement and social development of all students.

  • Provide school-wide prevention and intervention strategies and counseling services. 

  • Supervise a District-approved advisory program as described in California Education Code, Section 49600.

  • Provide consultation, training, and staff development to teachers and parents regarding students' needs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Credential Requirements

  • A valid Pupil Personnel Services credential with a specialization in School Counseling. 

  • Candidates eligible for a Pupil Personnel Services credential in counseling may be considered. Please reference the State of California Commission on Teacher Credentialing website for details (click here to view).

Application Process

To be eligible for consideration, interested candidates must submit the following. Your application will be considered incomplete if you do not include all required information, including completion of the Work Experience and Education Sections of the online application, required attachments, and responses to all application questions.

  • Copy of a valid Pupil Personnel Services: School Counseling Credential

  • Contact information for three professional references must be listed under the 'References' section of the application. References should be from a current or previous supervisor. We will contact your professional references during the application screening process of this application. Written reference letters dated within the last year are also accepted and may be attached to your online application in the Reference section. 

  • Contact information for all previous places of employment must be listed under the 'Employment History' section of the application (Assembly Bill 2534). As of January 1, 2025, in accordance with Education Code section 44939.5 (as amended by California AB 2534) applicants for certificated positions are required by law to provide a complete list of every school district, county office of education, charter school and/or state special school with which you have previously been employed, regardless of the length of service.

Required documents must be attached to the online employment application to be considered. All application questions should be answered thoroughly, clearly, and concisely as the responses provided (along with the entire application package) will be carefully reviewed to determine which candidates will move forward in the recruitment process. Please complete the online application to include all current and previous paid work history and education. Indicate on the application if you have unpaid volunteer or internship experience. The length of time you worked in each position or assignment must be clearly shown. A resume may be attached, but not substituted for completing the work history, education sections, or the supplemental questions of the employment application. Providing incomplete responses or answering "See Resume" or "See Application" may automatically disqualify your application from further consideration.

The examination process will consist of an application screening based on the candidate's education, work history and responses to the supplemental questions.  Professional References will be contacted for candidates who are selected to proceed in the examination process.  Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination.  Candidates selected to proceed in the examination process will be invited to an interview.  Applicants who pass the examination process will be placed on an eligible list for a period of one school year. The eligible list will be used to fill vacancies at various school sites.
