Description

UC San Diego’s Department of Music builds upon the University’s vision to “align our efforts to be a student-centered, research-focused, service-oriented public university” as the country’s foremost graduate program in contemporary and experimental music. Graduate degree programs focus in Composition, Computer Music, Integrative Studies, and Performance. The undergraduate program at UC San Diego offers a Bachelor of Arts in music, music humanities, and ICAM (Interdisciplinary Computing and the Arts). The curriculum emphasizes the development of musical listening and performance skills as applied to both contemporary and traditional music.

Independently manage all academic personnel activities for 28 salaried faculty, 37 temp faculty/lecturers, associate-ins, 90 graduate student researchers, readers, TAs, and visiting scholars.

Independently responsible for management of departmental academic affairs, including appointments, subsequent reviews, and personnel actions, leaves, visas, salary administration, benefits, separations, grievances, layoffs, recruitments, etc. Serve as principal advisor to the Chair and Associate Chair on academic affairs issues.

Exercise leadership and discretionary authority and utilize a high degree of independence, ingenuity, and analytical skills to resolve complex, unusual, and non-routine problems or issues. Develop, interpret, implement, and revise departmental academic policies, procedures, guidelines, and present this information to faculty and other academic.

Responsible for academic salary provision control and projections. Design and execute all aspects of administrative components for academic recruitment, including position announcement through academic file preparation. Interpret and analyze visa regulations and UC policies in order to advise international faculty, managers, supervisors, and employees regarding appropriate non-immigrant and immigrant visa statuses.

Represent Department on campus committees related to all aspects of Academic Personnel. Support the CAO, Department Chair, and Supervisors on special projects as necessary.

Serve as the main contact for new and continuing affiliates interested in the program. Respond to inquiries and disseminate written and electronic information and forms. Advise, interpret, and analyze applicable policies and procedures and provide a recommendation to assist managers, and leadership to make an informed decision given the available options. Conduct orientation for new scholars, non-faculty, faculty appointments, and affiliate population.

  • Must be available for occasional overtime.

Qualifications

  • Experience with academic personnel processes related to recruitment, appointment, and salary review.
  • Comprehensive knowledge, demonstrated working experience, and ability to interpret and apply University policies, procedures, and other regulations relating to all aspects of academic appointments, including affirmative action, recruitment, employee relations, submission of appointment, merit, promotion, reappointment, and termination files, payroll policies, employee benefits, job classifications, international/visa policies, etc.
  • Experience in interpreting personnel and employee contracts and policies.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of and ability to interpret and apply local, state, and federal employment laws, including FMLA/CFRA/PDL/ADA/FEHA. Knowledge of local, state, and federal safety standards and regulations, and governing agencies.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Payroll/Personnel System.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply/interpret organization and college policies and procedures which govern academic HR.
  • Knowledge and skill in applying basic accounting principles and in utilizing related analytical concepts.
  • Knowledge of unit academic culture and educational goals of discipline(s) served.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $65,800 - $115,000 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $31.51 - $55.08

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
