Overview

The hourly rate for this position is $19.28 and is non-negotiable. 

Under direction, incumbents must have course work in the discipline requested on the task order Statement of Work.

This Statement of Work is to provide technical and analytical support in the fields of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related engineering disciplines. It covers the need for a student services contractor to develop hardware and software solutions for the test and evaluation of emerging RF systems. Work would include mechanical design and fabrication support, electrical system integration, modification of existing hardware/software configurations, and the ability to compile and operate applications under development. Basic RF design, mechanical system design, and use of Software Defined Radios with Linux operating systems. The student contractor should be familiar with basic RF and E&M principles, mechanical design fundamentals, and materials science. In addition, the student can identify basic signal types, troubleshoot RF systems, and support mechanical assembly and testing operations.

Current Model Range projects develop shipboard system enhancements and support various agencies and programs including Foreign Comparative Test, Office of Naval Research, Allied Interoperability, etc. These efforts require mechanical and electrical design, fabrication, and integration.

Responsibilities

The student contractor shall provide analytical and technical support in the following areas, as specified under individual task orders, to the work sponsor:

 

Mechanical Engineering Support:

  • Assist with design and fabrication of mechanical components and assemblies for RF systems.
  • Support mechanical integration of RF hardware systems and test fixtures.
  • Assist with CAD modeling using SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar platforms.
  • Support prototype development and testing of mechanical systems.
  • Assist with materials selection and mechanical analysis.

Electrical Engineering and Software Support:

  • Assist with design, development, and sustainment of source code associated with open-source applications used in RF systems.
  • Develop and deploy applications and scripts associated with RF systems under test.
  • Support electrical system design, circuit analysis, and PCB layout.
  • Assist assembly and troubleshooting of electrical and electromechanical test systems.
  • Assist with interpretation of RF signals and conduct quality analysis.
  • Support electrical integration and wiring of test systems.

Qualifications

Undergraduate 3: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related engineering major preferred; relevant majors such as Materials Science, Systems Engineering, or Applied Physics may be suitable given relevant coursework and/or work experience.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Relevant coursework and/or experience:

  • Differential equations
  • Calculus 1, 2 & 3
  • Programming courses (Python, MATLAB, C , etc.)
  • Physics (mechanics, electromagnetics)
  • Statics and Dynamics (for ME track)
  • Systems Engineering
  • Engineering Design and CAD
  • aterials Science fundamentals

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Signal analysis and interpretation
  • Experience with Software Defined Radios
  • Experience with RF systems
  • CAD software proficiency (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, etc.)
  • Mechanical fabrication and assembly
  • Circuit design and PCB layout
  • Systems Engineering
  • Python, Java, C#, C , JavaScript, or MATLAB programming experience
  • Experience with GIT and version control
  • Experience in RF test and experimentation
  • CAD software proficiency (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Fusion 360)
  • Mechanical fabrication experience (3D printing, machining, etc.)
  • Embedded systems programming
  • PCB design software experience (Altium, KiCad, Eagle)
  • Ability to read and implement technical documents, engineering drawings, or test standards
  • Flexible with learning new tools and technologies based on project needs
  • Experience in deploying software and hardware systems
  • Independent/self-starter who can operate under minimal oversight
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team

ADDITIONAL APPLICANT INFORMATION:

  • This position will require the employee to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret security clearance.
  • Due to the regulations established by the Department of Defense, only US Citizens may qualify.
  • This is a student position and is limited to working 20 hours per week.
  • This position will remain open until filled.
  • Candidate must reside in California and live within a commutable distance from SDSU at time of hire.
