Overview

We are seeking a skilled Venue Manager to join our team. This position is responsible for communicating with existing tenants, prospective renters, and company staff to make sure their needs are met and they can be scheduled without conflict. The Rental Manager oversees the rental agreements, invoices, and certificates of insurance for each renter and will help coordinate their technical needs in the Light Box and Studio 106. Tracking the usage of the respective venues is an important part of this position as this information is often used to secure grants, developing new ways to collect this information will be needed as San Diego Dance Theater (SDDT) seeks to continue securing grants. The Venues Manager is responsible for keeping SDDT staff updated on rental activity, maintaining accurate renter contact information, and ensuring tenants follow building code restrictions and leave the space clean after use. Though this job is largely a customer service job, a working understanding of audio and lighting is highly recommended for this position as it can both help to assess renters needs more accurately and there may be times when the Rental Manager may need to serve in the capacity as a technician. The ideal candidate will have experience in managing client relationships, organizing performance logistics, and operating theater technology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Tenant Communication and Processing: Scheduling, invoicing, and addressing tenant needs as they arise. This also includes having a basic understanding of DocuSign, QuickBooks, and liability insurance types and providers. Quoting renters accurately and helping renters formulate realistic production/event schedules is crucial for the happiness of all parties and the success of their events.
  • Cross-department Collaboration: With the high volume of staff, students, and renters using both spaces (Studio 106 and Light Box Theater), communicating with SDDT’s school and program schedule are essential to having the venue operations work well. It is the responsibility of the Venue Manager to ensure a smooth transition between renter activities and SDDT school/program activities and to regularly audit the spaces for any violations of the renter contract.
  • Lighting and A/V: Basic lighting design, audio, and video knowledge is required to help potential clients imagine what is possible in the space, answer their technical questions, and help facilitate rentals as needed. The Rental Manager will also schedule other staff Technicians as the need arises.
  • Tenant Compliance/Venue Care: Ensure tenants follow all building code restrictions and adhere to venue policies. Verify that renters clean up after themselves and leave the space in acceptable condition.
  • Event Support: Receive clients with a welcoming attitude. Being ready to help renters with event logistics, providing technical assistance, and helping to facilitate safe and smooth productions.
  • Janitorial Duties: Oversee the cleanliness and organization of the venue by vacuuming, sweeping, and mopping the floors before and after events. Set up trash bins, remove waste, and keep the venue in good condition. Knowledge of dance flooring is highly desirable.
  • Maintenance & Inventory: Maintain and repair technical equipment, and manage inventory for lighting, sound, and other tools needed for productions. Schedule technician for equipment repair if necessary.
  • On-the-Job Troubleshooting: Troubleshoot any technical issues that arise during rehearsals or performances and resolve them promptly to ensure minimal disruption.
