About The Role

Settled in the award-winning San Diego Convention Center, the Maintenance Supervisor oversees and assists with the day-to-day installation, modification, repair, and maintenance of electrical, plumbing, and mechanical, and general building systems. This includes the oversight of internal trades staff by managing work orders per the preventative maintenance plan and building code requirements.

What You Will Do

  • Oversees internal trades staff including assisting with developing the staffing schedule.
  • Review maintenance work order requests to diagnose problems and ensure correct, cost-effective, and quality repairs for the operation of the facility.
  • Closely monitors work order backlog; reports status and develops and implements strategies for backlog reduction.
  • Works closely with management and engineering personnel to effectively manage and implement system repairs, equipment modifications, and scheduled routine inspections while minimizing impact to events.
  • Inspects work in progress and at completion to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and company standards; inspects work performed by internal personnel and contractors.
  • Utilizes the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) by managing work orders to ensure timely completion. Also assists in updating, adding, or removing building assets as needed.
  • Follows the preventative maintenance programs for all trades based on building code requirements and state/federal requirements.
  • Coordinates facility and equipment shutdowns to ensure maintenance and calibration activities are completed, including all necessary documentation.
  • Ensures internal staff follow standard operating practices; provides recommendations to management for procedure changes as needed.
  • Responsible for carrying out the company safety program; ensures staff follow safety policy in work methods and procedures; enforces local and federal OSHA regulations/safety practices; educates personnel on rules, regulations, safe working habits and potential hazards presented by their work environment.
  • Maintains current and accurate documentation/reports to reflect maintenance activities.
  • Assists with budget planning and manages the current maintenance budget for repairs and equipment ordering.
  • Monitors the general condition of the facility and ensures the trades shops and inventory storage areas remain in a clean and orderly condition. Assists with ordering inventory to ensure adequate stock for routine maintenance.
  • Provides input on capital projects to upgrade or expand facilities and equipment needed. Assists in planning, execution, and documentation.
  • Directs and oversees the work of contract laborers and vendors to ensure required standards are met.
  • Forges partnerships with internal stakeholders on maintenance programs; develops strategies and establishes guidelines for work plans in assigned areas.
  • Communicates work outcomes and expectations with internal stakeholders; assists in developing work plans, timeframes and resources to meet operational goals; approaches and resolves conflicts; seeks opportunities to streamline and reinvent work processes.
  • Maintains existing contract service agreements with selected vendors and works in tandem with the Procurement Department as needed in the creation of future contract agreements.
  • Other job duties as assigned.


What You Will Need

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent and three years’ experience with building construction trades, and/or facilities maintenance, including two years of lead or supervisory experience.
  • Experience with operating a Computerized Maintenance Management System.
  • Experience in operating within commercial building requirements including knowledge of Title 24 and applicable local/federal building code is desired.
  • Must have a valid California driver’s license (non-resident students and military must have a valid driver’s license from their U.S. state of residency).
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret building drawings, specifications, shop drawings, schematics, manufacturer’s specifications, electrical studies, and other reference material.
  • Ability to read and understand various construction/maintenance contracts, technical procedures, and governmental regulations.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of numerical representation, including whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
  • Possesses strong communication and teamwork skills to adapt to changing circumstances.
  • Robust knowledge of Microsoft applications including Word, Excel, Outlook, as well as ERP systems.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to maneuver throughout the facility to perform job tasks and work assignments and respond to both emergency and non-emergency situations.
  • The employee is regularly required to be mobile to, from, and around the maintenance shops and be able to respond to any area of the facility promptly.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to work from an elevated platform lift (such as a scissor or boom); handle or feel; reach; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.
  • The employee is occasionally required to be stationary. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
  • The employee must be aware of and use proper personal protection equipment (PPE) necessary to safely complete the assigned task.
  • The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; confined spaces; and outside weather conditions.
  • The noise level in the work environment is occasionally loud.
  • Ability to adapt to a fluid work schedule, to include weekends, to provide appropriate support and interaction to employees and other internal departments.
  • The Convention Center is a 24/7 operation; therefore, hours and days outside of the standard work schedule may be needed.
