The Land Use Services Department is looking for a Supervising Building and Safety Engineer* to join a dynamic team dedicated to outstanding service, innovation, and teamwork. The Department seeks a knowledgeable professional inspired by community-based planning, permitting system innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the pursuit of best practices.

Reporting to the Building Official, the Supervising Building and Safety Engineer will assign and supervise the work of professional, technical and clerical staff. Duties may include:
  • Review plan check reports, prepared by assigned staff, that indicate deficiencies in plans, calculations and other discrepancies
  • Assist in settling conflicts with builders concerning code interpretations, requirements, and substandard structures
  • Answer questions and advise the public by phone, email, or in person with information regarding the permit process
  • Review and recommend staff workload allocation and permit tracking
  • Prepare and sign performance evaluations
  • Participate in hiring decisions
  • Recommend and carry out disciplinary actions

RECRUITMENT BONUS: Bonus payments up to $2000 in total compensation may be available for newly hired employees from this recruitment.**

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Pre-Employment Process: Incumbent must successfully complete a background check prior to appointment.

Travel: A valid Class C Driver License is required to carry out the essential job-related functions of this position. Mileage reimbursement and proof of automobile liability must be maintained.

Physical: This position includes the following demands: frequent sitting; occasional walking, standing, bending, and squatting; fine manipulation in both hands; continuously reach or work below the shoulder level; must frequently demonstrate near vision and occasionally demonstrate far vision; occasionally lift or carry ten (10) pounds or less; occasionally work near equipment and machinery on rough, uneven, rocky, or slippery surfaces; occasionally exposed to dust, gas, toxic materials, noise, and extremes in temperature and/or humidity; occasionally use protective equipment or clothing.

Minimum Requirements

Candidates must posses the required License, Education, and Experience to qualify.

LICENSE Must hold current status as a registered Professional Civil or Structural Engineer with the State of California Department of Consumer Affairs.
EDUCATION Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Civil Engineering or a closely related field. ***
EXPERIENCE Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience performing complex building plan review within a public-sector jurisdiction. Experience must include reviewing commercial, industrial, and mixed-use projects for compliance with the adopted California Building Standards Code.

***Note: Qualifying degrees or coursework must be completed at a college or university accredited by any accrediting association recognized by the United States Department of Education Degree Equivalency Evaluation: Degrees or coursework completed outside the U.S. must be accompanied with an evaluation report from a reputable credential evaluation service showing equivalency to degrees or coursework completed at a college or university accredited by any accrediting association recognized by the United States Department of Education.

Desired Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess:
  • Building Plans Examiner Certification issued by the International Code Council (ICC) is highly desirable
  • Extensive technical knowledge of building code analysis
  • Proven leadership in managing plan review operations
  • Commitment to timely permit processing
  • Strong regulatory judgement
  • Dedication to public safety and code compliance
