Job Description

The San Bernardino Valley College (SBVC) Applied Technology division seeks a creative faculty member with a demonstrated commitment to student success for a full-time tenure track position.
The successful candidate will exhibit a passion for teaching and will have an opportunity to lead a growing aviation Flight Operations program and to work collaboratively with the college's other departments to build an integrated program that offers multiple academic/and or professional pathways. Additionally, the successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to integrating equity and inclusion in all aspects of their work. The faculty will also collaborate with local aviation companies and major airlines to establish internships, Registered Apprenticeships, and other employment opportunities for students.
Representative Duties:
The following duties are typical of those performed by faculty in this classification. Other duties may be assigned as appropriate.
• Teach a full load of classes, incorporating equitable teaching practices.
• Create course materials, such as syllabi, lectures, homework, quizzes, exams, lab manuals, etc.
• Provide instruction in flight-operations and aviation intro related courses (Air Traffic Control, Aircraft Maintenance, Aviation Management, Drone/UAS, etc.) utilizing equitable and inclusive teaching practices.
• Evaluate and grade students' homework, laboratory work, and assignments.
• Work collegiality with the faculty and staff of the division to advance student success.
• Participate in department, division, and campus meetings and activities.
• Participate in assessment of student learning outcomes, community outreach, departmental website development, curriculum development, and program review processes.
• Participate in regular professional development activities.
• Effectively develop and maintain culturally sensitive and equity-minded learning environments.
• Beyond the learning environment, demonstrate cultural competence, sensitivity to, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice.
• Provide a safe and positive educational environment conducive to effective learning.
• Provide instruction and student support in a variety of formats and deliveries such as online, in-person,
hybrid, hyflex, fast-track, accelerated, etc.
• Maintain current knowledge in the discipline and engage in innovative methods of effective in-person and
online education.
• Positively engage students, promote development of critical thinking skills, collaboration, and empathy.
• Maintain professional and ethical standards.
• Participate in recruitment, outreach, and development of cooperative work experience opportunities for
students in flight training programs.
• Provide training required for flight students in accordance with FAA operating procedures, guidelines,
and regulations.
• Deliver ground school and/or flight instruction in accordance with FAA Part 61 or Part 141 requirements,
including classroom, simulator, and in-flight training as applicable.
• Provide the skills and knowledge required for competency in the fields of flight operations, including the
use of reference materials, tools, equipment, and technology.
• Provide an in-depth knowledge of student pilot through commercial pilot privileges, limitations, and
responsibilities, as well as pilot certifications and operational procedures, including a working knowledge
of Federal Aviation Regulations.
• Maintain accurate records of student progress, including training logs, grades, and attendance, in
accordance with FAA policies and institutional requirements.
• Develop and maintain articulation agreements and partnerships with secondary schools, flight schools,
and four-year institutions to promote aviation education pathways.
• Conduct pre-flight and/or post-flight briefings for flight students, emphasizing safety, aeronautical
decision-making, and operational excellence, if applicable.
• Provide mentorship to students pursuing careers in flight operations, fostering a holistic approach to
professional development.
• Maintain compliance with institutional policies, rules, regulations, and collective bargaining agreements.
• Perform other duties as required by contract, collective bargaining agreements, and general institutional
needs.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
(To be specified in accordance with California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office Faculty
Minimum Qualifications)
• Bachelor's degree AND two (2) years of full-time professional experience
OR
• An Associate's degree AND six (6) years of full-time professional experience
AND
Experience that indicates a sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse
academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community
college students, including those with physical and learning disabilities.
Desired Qualifications:
• Possession of a valid California Community College credential authorizing instruction in flight
• A current FAA Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) certificate and/or Advanced Ground Instructor (AGI) Instrument Ground Instructor (IGI) certificate, and a Commercial Pilot certificate
• Master's degree in aviation, education, or a related field.
• Experience in curriculum design development in aviation and flight operations.
• Recent industry experience, including knowledge of employment opportunities and
requirements in flight operations.
• Experience in the management and operation of flight programs.
• Capable of teaching all Flight Operations and aviation intro related courses. (Air Traffic
Control, Aircraft Maintenance, Aviation Management, Drone/UAS etc.
Employment Requirements
The person selected for hire will be required to complete the following pre-employment requirements:
• Submit to and successfully pass DOJ live scan/fingerprinting. Cost of live-scan services to be borne by candidate.
• Sealed official transcript(s) in envelope from institution or electronic copies emailed directly from institution (for positions with higher education requirement)
• Tuberculosis (TB) risk assessment
• Employment verification(s) (for salary placement on faculty salary schedule)
• Other pre-employment requirements may be required depending on the position (i.e. certifications or licenses; see job posting qualifications section for details).
