What are the responsibilities and job description for the Restaurant Industry Accountant, Tax Compliance and Software Advisor position at Sampson LLC?
Sampson Business Solutions LLC, in partnership with REBO
Sampson Business Solutions LLC is an accounting and advisory firm in Sayville, NY. We provide CFO, accounting, tax, and valuation services to small and mid-sized businesses. We're working with REBO on software built for restaurant owners, and we need an experienced restaurant accountant to be the person the developers turn to when they need the answer to be right.
This role sits between the numbers and the code. The developers will ask how tips flow through payroll, how a multi-location group files in different states, and what happens to sales tax when a customer uses a gift card. You'll give them the answer, check that the software handles it correctly, and tell them when it doesn't.
What you'll do
- Answer accounting, payroll, and tax questions from the REBO development team in plain language
- Prepare and review state payroll filings and state income tax filings for restaurant clients [scope to be confirmed]
- Test new software features against real restaurant scenarios and document what works and what breaks
- Write test cases covering tip reporting, tip credits, FICA tip credit, multi-state payroll, and sales tax
- Review calculations and reports produced by the software before they reach customers
- Flag compliance changes at the state level that the software will need to reflect
What you bring
- Hands-on accounting experience inside the restaurant industry [minimum years to be confirmed]
- Working knowledge of restaurant payroll, including tipped employees, tip pooling, and Form 8027
- Experience with multi-state payroll and state income tax filings
- Familiarity with restaurant POS systems and how their data reaches the books
- Strong QuickBooks Online and Excel skills
- Patience explaining accounting to people who aren't accountants
- EA or equivalent professional credential preferred
Testing experience is a plus. It isn't required. We'll teach you how to write a test case. We can't teach ten years of watching restaurant payroll go wrong.
