Under general supervision from the Social Services Manager, performs professional social services casework primarily regarding family preservation. This position provides parents with structured and individualized team support to help families reintegrate children back into their homes due to out-of-home placement. Utilizes CPS knowledge in performance of the family preservation job class duties.  This job class is treated as FLSA Non-Exempt.

Distinguishing Features:  The Social Worker I (Preservation) is distinguished from other Social Worker I’s by an emphasis on family preservation.    

1. Provides family preservation and case management, follow up and support services to individuals and their families including home visits/ services in the home.
  • Refers clients to other resource agencies and programs such as, but not limited to Behavioral Health, AHCCCS, the Parenting Program and the HHS Health Services Division when necessary.
  • Coordinates with other agencies to provide emergency assistance and resources involving crisis intervention, family issues, food, clothing or medical services.

2. Makes home visits or visits to other settings to provide direct family preservation services and support services to individual and families.
  • Provides ongoing assessment of families and is responsible for creating monthly documentation to provide to Case Managers for use in court or for other professional areas. 
  • Provide supervised visitation between children in out of home care and their parents, siblings or family members.
  • Observes and records interactions during the visit, coaching and modeling of parenting skills, connecting parents to available formal and informal community resources. 
  • Transports children to and from the visitation. 
  • Builds parent protective capacities so that the parents have the cognitive, behavioral and emotional ability to ensure child safety and family well-being. 

3. Inputs data in the Case Management System(CMS) and maintains accurate statistical data using the computerized database for easy retrieval.
  • Maintains current and comprehensive case files that include assessments, and other case file documentation.  Prepares periodic reports from records, as required.

4. Participates in training opportunities that will enhance knowledge of family reunification and preservation, tribal case management, child abuse and neglect.

5. Focuses primarily on family preservation efforts but documents and reports referrals of family issues, child abuse and neglect.
  • Works closely with case managers and court other legal parties to keep them informed of family’s progress. 
  • Conducts collaborative interviews and contacts all interested parties to gather information.

6. Participates in weekly staff meetings.  Discusses issues or cases that require additional input and planning.
  • Helps provide alternative solutions to issues to ensure the greatest benefit for the clients in accomplishing the program objectives.

7. Attends professional development meetings and training as directed by immediate supervisor.  Keeps professionally current in the Social Work field and particularly with new developments, practices and procedures regarding family reunification issues.

8. Helps maintain an environment within the Social Services Department that encourages teamwork, interdependence and ethical behavior.

9. Performs other job-related duties as assigned to maintain and enhance departmental and program operations.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics:
  • Knowledge of the history, culture, laws, rules, customs, and traditions of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices regarding family reunification and preservation.
  • Knowledge of CPS policies, practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Federal and State laws, rules, regulations and standards that apply to public social service programs.
  • Knowledge of social work principles and concepts.
  • Knowledge of social work methods and techniques, including group and individual counseling, crisis intervention and referrals.

  • Skill counseling individuals, families or other groups.
  • Skill with family reunification, preservation and case management including planning, scheduling and time management.
  • Skill establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other social work professionals, SRPMIC co-workers, Community officials and clients.
  • Skill evaluating customer needs and utilizing SRPMIC resources or other appropriate referrals to meet client needs.
  • Skill dealing with sensitive, personal issues and maintaining appropriate professional, confidential relationships.

  • Ability to make home visits and provide alternative solutions in order to meet client needs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain accurate record-keeping systems and procedures including computerized record-keeping.
  • Ability to work under pressure with multiple task deadlines.
  • Ability to use personal computers, related software and other standard office equipment such as facsimile, photocopier and calculator.
  • Ability to drive SRPMIC vehicles.
    • Education and Experience:  A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Social Work or a closely related field, AND experience equivalent to one to three (1-3) full-time professional level work in the social services field.
      • One (1) year of supervised internship from an accredited college/university can be counted toward the experience requirements.
      • Demonstrated successful experience with family reunification and preservation preferred.
      • Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience that would allow the candidate to satisfactorily perform the duties of this position, will be considered.
      • Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill.
