Definition:    Under the direct supervision of Clinic Manager, Residential Treatment,  the Peer Support Specialist (PSS) utilizing his/her past significant life-altering experiences will assist and guide JTR adult residents toward the identification and achievement of specific goals specified to his/her treatment plan, work collaboratively with all JTR staff of all levels to help facilitate client recovery, promotes pro-social community activities, recovery, self-advocacy, self-help, and development of a support system This position is treated as a FLSA non-exempt position. This position is subject to working on-call and weekend hours

  • Uses past experiences to provide individualized, ongoing guidance, coaching, and support to individuals seeking or in active recovery.
  • Work directly with patients in Journey to Recovery Setting, Outpatient PHP Setting and BHS Division. 
  • Work with families and loved ones to support recovery
  • Provide support to patients in program by attending clinical staff meetings and adult family team meetings. 
  • Work closely with multidisciplinary team, help coordinate care for patient. 
  • Assists clients in identifying effective coping techniques, self-help strategies, and increasing social support networks.
  • Observes all rules of confidentiality relating to clinical information and treatment, both internally and externally,
  • Facilitate Peer Support Recovery Groups in Outpatient/Inpatient Setting
  • Navigate Electronic Medical Record and document all services in timely manner
  • Maintain an expected level of clinical interaction and productivity.
  • Adheres to deliverable timelines, both internally and externally.
  • Provides support, peer case management services, guidance, and education for individuals seeking or in active recovery.
  • Facilitates or assists in group settings to promote harm reduction and recovery.
  • Completes necessary activities and documentation related to grant funded projects, 
  • Performs other job-related duties and special assignments as required.


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics:

  • Knowledge of the culture, customs, traditions and history of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.
  • Knowledge of behavioral management, de-escalation methods, crisis intervention, and defusing techniques to prevent violent behavior harmful to self or others and the ability to apply these techniques to a client population in various levels of crisis.
  • Knowledge of First-Aid methods and CPR techniques.
  • Knowledge of Addiction Recovery Principles
  • Knowledge and acceptance Harm Reduction Philosophy of Care and Medication Assisted Treatment. 
  • Knowledge of HIV/AIDS, chronic medical illnesses and their basic symptoms.
  • Knowledge of the effects of alcohol consumption and long-term effects of alcohol and substance dependency.
  • Knowledge of the JTR programs, policies and procedures, particularly data collection system used by the program.
  • Knowledge of basic computer software including MS Office.


  • Skill assessing and evaluating emergency situations and using emergency procedures.
  • Skill following complex verbal and written instructions, policies and procedures.
  • Skill establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with the clients, SRPMIC staff and the public.
  • Skill operating a variety of standard office equipment including photocopiers, FAX machines, printers, scanner and copier to fulfill job requirements.


  • Ability to maintain accurate and timely program records, according to prescribed standards.
  • Ability to drive various SRPMIC vehicles including, but not limited to, a fifteen (15) person van.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.


  • Education & Experience:   Graduation from high school or GED equivalent and 1 year full-time experience in a detoxification, outpatient and/or residential or health care setting.
    • 1 year full-time experience in behavioral health either as a recipient of services, a family member of someone receiving services or primary caregiver of a service recipient 
    • 1 year full-time experience as a Recovery Coach or similar position
    • For enrolled Community Members without a GED, must obtain a GED.  Requires participation in a GED Program and successful completion of the Arizona state certified exam in order to continue employment with SRPMIC.
  • Must obtain certification in First Aid and CPR within 1 month from the date of hire if applicant does not currently possess the necessary certification.
  • Peer Support or RSS training certificate of completion required within six (6) months of hire. An equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to behavioral health is acceptable.
  • Familiarity with the Pima or Maricopa languages is helpful but not required


  • Equivalency:   Any equivalent combination of experience that will allow the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the job may be considered when filling the position.


  • Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill

  • May be required to work beyond normal work hours including nights, weekends and holidays. Must undergo provided training on Universal Precautions and Infectious Control within 2 weeks of hire date. 
  • New hires in clinical roles must present valid BLS certification (Healthcare Provider BLS for clinicians) prior to the first day of patient care. 
  • Exception – For all Journey to Recovery direct care employees, valid CPR/BLS certification and First Aid certification must be provided on the first day of employment or within 7 days of hire.
  • Ensures all patient information is kept confidential and complies with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations and SRPMIC HHS policies and procedures.

Prior to hire as an employee, applicants will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Will be required to pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.
