Helping Hands Associate

Definition: Under general supervision of the Thrift Store Manager and Social Services Manager in the Life Enhancement and Resource Network (LEARN) Division of the Social Services Department, assist in the overall operation of the store. This job class is treated as FLSA Non-Exempt.

Provides Quality Customer Service: Greets customers, makes them welcome, assists with inquiries and ensures a positive shopping experience.

2. Receives all incoming donations.

• Help sort, categorize and determine items to be sold in the Thrift Store.
• Accepts all unclaimed “Lost & Found” items from Casino Arizona business enterprise for sale in the Thrift Store.
• May help the Manager coordinate donations to other charitable entities including other Native American Tribes.
• Washes and reconditions donated items as necessary in preparation for store sale.
• Prices items for sale.

3. Donation Management: Arranges stock on shelves or puts clothing on racks for display in the sales area.  Make sure that the merchandise is displayed properly.  Keeps the store neat and clean.

4. Sales Operations: Operating POS/Cash register, handling cash and electric transactions and maintaining accurate financial records.

5. Store Maintenance: Keeping the store clean and organized, including sales floor and donations areas.

6. Oversee the volunteers who work at the store.

7. Community Outreach & Education: Assists the Thrift Store Manager with promoting and advertising the store’s goods and services.

• Helps educate the Community regarding the store’s purpose, goals and services.
• May help coordinate Community announcements and advertising with the Community Relations Office.  This includes any News advertising and electronic signage announcements.

8. Special Sales & Promotions: Assists with all special and holiday sales including, but not limited to, the Thanksgiving and Christmas special events.

9. Charitable Efforts: Assists the Thrift Store Manager by coordinating efforts with the Social Services Department’s Journey to Recovery program staff that provides clothing and goods to needy clients.

• During the intake process, helps identify certain clothing and other items for donation to other Native American Tribes.
• Performs other job-related duties as assigned by the Thrift Store Manager, Social Services Manager or Social Services Director.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics:

• Knowledge of the culture, customs, traditions, history and government of the Salt River Pima- Maricopa Indian Community.
• Knowledge of retail management practices and procedures.

• Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with SRPMIC staff, Community members and the public.
• Skill in operating a cash register.

• Ability to develop a customer service-oriented atmosphere.
• Ability to stand on feet for extensive periods of time.
• Ability to carry heavy items weighing about 25 pounds.
• Ability to communicate with, and work effectively with, employees and the public.

Education & Experience – High School Diploma or equivalent.

• Customer service experience is preferred.

Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience that would allow the candidate to satisfactorily perform the duties of this position, will be considered.

Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill.

• May be required to work outside normal work hours including nights, weekends and holidays.
