The mission of SLLDA is to advocate for people in the criminal system by providing client-centered services, protecting rights and promoting social justice. SLLDA is an independent non-profit legal organization funded by Salt Lake County and other municipalities for the purpose of protecting the constitutional rights of individuals who are accused of crimes.

The Social Work Department Administrative Assistant is a vital member of our interdisciplinary defense team. This position provides administrative and case coordination support for the Social Work Department by managing records requests, supporting competency and private evaluation requests, preparing legal documents, and serving as a liaison between attorneys, social workers, evaluators, and outside agencies.

The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail-oriented, able to manage multiple priorities, and committed to supporting our mission of providing exceptional legal representation to indigent clients.

Essential Responsibilities:

REQUESTING RECORDS:

  • Drafting/Sending out requests
  • Tracking for records
  • Organizing received records into Filevine
  • Forwarding records to evaluators/USH/DHS if necessary

GRAMA REQUESTS:

  • Drafting subpoena’s/court orders for attorney approval and filing
  • Sending copies of orders/subpoenas to agency AG’s (work with objections or issues to get stipulations)
  • Tracking for signed orders
  • Sending signed orders/requests to agencies
  • Tracking for records
  • Sending records to case team/other as needed

COMPETENCY EVALUATIONS:

  • Preparing competency petitions
  • Tracking for signed orders
  • Work with DHS to get evaluators assigned
  • Preparing contact orders/track down and forward client contact information
  • Sending collateral documentation to evaluators
  • Tracking for evaluations
  • Dispersing completed evals and FOF’s (to be completed by attorney)
  • Tracking for signed FOF’s
  • Sending information to USH for restoration
  • Tracking restoration progress evaluations

PRIVATE EVALUATIONS:

  • Preparing contact/transport orders
  • Sending collateral documentation to evaluators
  • Tracking for evaluations
  • Dispersing Evaluations to team

PHONE CALLS AND EMAILS:

  • From clients, attorneys, outside agencies, and evaluators

Qualifications:

  • Paralegal certificate, associate degree in Paralegal Studies, or equivalent paralegal education
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a paralegal or legal administrative professional
  • Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and legal case management software
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality while handling sensitive legal and medical information
