**JOB SUMMARY**

*The Parapro (Special Education)- Self-Contained position provides assistance to teaching personnel in the supervision and instruction of special education students in special classes such as Diagnostic Kindergarten/1^st^ Grade, Academic Support, Behavior Support, and Essential Elements; data collection; Medicaid documentation; provides one-on-one support, and assists students by meeting special health care needs and developing and aiding students' daily living, motor, and behavioral skills---including but not limited to feeding, toileting, and moving, rolling, pushing, pulling, bending, reaching, stooping, and lifting up to 30 pounds.*

**MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS**

  • All positions require selected candidates to be fingerprinted and successfully pass a criminal background check. *Additional minimum required qualifications for this position are:
  • High school diploma or a recognized equivalent
  • *Per Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), interested applicants must be Highly Qualified to be considered for the position and have completed one of the following:*
  • - completed at least two years at an accredited higher education institution (minimum 48 semester hours), or
  • obtained an associates (or higher) degree from an accredited higher education institution, or
  • satisfied a rigorous state or local assessment (Parapro Assessment/PRAXIS ETS) with a score of 460 or higher

*The higher education institution official transcripts, or college diploma, or a copy of the Paraprofessional Assessment must be provided with your application or upon a contingent offer of employment*

  • Effective communication skills with both children and adults, including speaking, reading, writing, and understanding English; proficiency in grammar and punctuation
  • Ability to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percentages, and ratios
  • Ability to use basic office equipment (e.g., phone, copy, fax machines etc.) and Microsoft Office

**PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS**

  • Experience in a K-12 special education or public employment environment
  • Spanish or other language proficiency, including ability to read, write, speak, and understand

**ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES**

  • Assist and supervise students as they attend general education classes and provide support according to their Individualized Education Plan (IEP) needs; under the direction of the teacher, utilize knowledge of student's IEP and concepts for Special Education learning to implement learnin

g and behavior plans that meet students' social and behavioral interventions, health care plans, and ensure compliance with IEPs

  • Complete safety care training
  • Work with students who may have significant behavior, academic, or personal health care needs, which include feeding, toileting, etc
  • Under the guidance of the teacher, provide instruction to students 1:1 or in small groups to work on IEP goals or other materials as directed. Use knowledge of age-appropriate activities and stages of child development to implement classroom management techniques, provide classroom interventions and a variety of activities (e.g., constructive play, lea ning in small groups, behavior modification activities, etc.), while managing time effectively
  • Collect data pertaining to student behaviors, academics, and self-care. Under the supervision of the teacher, document your duties with students to support Medicaid funding. Perform record-keeping and clerical functions using basic job-related equipment (e.g., copying, grading, etc.) to assist teacher and administrator
  • Provide support in helping students get safely on and off the bus in the AM/PM
  • Administer assessment instruments under the direction of teacher; confer with teacher to assist in evaluating student progress and implement student objectives
  • Operate physical education equipment and supervise playground activities using standardized methods. Support classroom teacher in monitoring students out in the community during school-sanctioned events
  • Read a variety of manuals; write documents following prescribed formats
  • Report incidents (e.g., fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) to maintain the personal safety of students and adhere to district policies, procedures, and state law
  • Administer first aid and adhere to safety practices
  • Participate in various meetings as assigned to convey and gather information required to perform functions; present information to others; attend additional training opportunities as deemed necessary
  • Adapt to changing work priorities and work with frequent interruptions; work as part of a team by collaborating with own and other work units; meet deadlines
  • Work under limited supervision; utilize prioritization strategies; accurately process detailed information; be attentive to detail
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance to fulfill job requirements efficiently and effectively
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing with diverse individuals and groups of people while maintaining confidentiality and building positive working relationships with employees and stakeholders
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit

**WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS**

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling up to 30 pounds, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 40% sitting, 30% walking, and 30% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.
