JOB SUMMARY

The Bus Driver transports students over scheduled routes and to/from special excursions; ensures the vehicle of operation is in safe operating condition; and ensures the safety of students during transport, loading, and unloading from buses.

 

Please note bus routes for this position will be assigned at the discretion of the Transportation Director and routing team. In the event of a shortage of driving hours, the incumbent may be reassigned to other duties as needed to fulfill their contracted hours. These duties may include but are not limited to field trips, office assistance, or support for other departmental needs.

 

 

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

All positions require selected candidates to be fingerprinted and successfully pass a criminal background check. 

Additional minimum required qualifications for this position are:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent
  2. Hold a Commercial Driver License (CDL) and school bus driver endorsement
  3. Successfully passed and ability to maintain the USBE Physical Assessment Standards for Utah School Bus Drivers
  4. Hold CPR & First Aid Certificate
  5. Must be a current Salt Lake City School District (SLCSD) Bus Driver and have at least one (1) year of experience currently working as a Bus Driver for SLCSD
  6. Able to roll, push, pull, bend, reach, stoop, and lift up to 50 pounds
  7. Speak, read, write, analyze, and follow written and verbal communication in English; listen to, and understand information and ideas presented verbally or in writing
  8. Adaptability and understanding of cultural differences while coping with stressful situations related to students and maintaining confidentiality

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Drive school bus, and other vehicles, to transport passengers over scheduled routes accessed via an electronic device, to and from school, field trips, and other occasions, in a safe and timely manner
  2. Drive routes as assigned, and perform other duties including driving field trips, office tasks, and other tasks to support department needs, to fulfill contracted hours
  3. Assist students and other passengers (e.g., students in wheelchairs, students with special needs, etc.) to provide safe loading and unloading from buses including both emergency situations and normal transport
  4. Advise students and other passengers of appropriate behavior (e.g., bus safety rules for students, bus conduct reports, etc.) to reinforce regulations and maintain passenger safety
  5. Supervise students and other passengers during transit to maintain safety and follow district policy
  6. Support other personnel as may be required (e.g., emergency situations, etc.) to ensure an efficient and effective work environment. Assist in administering first aid if certified
  7. Assess incidents, complaints, accidents, and potential emergency situations (e.g., monitor vehicle repair request sheets, etc.) to resolve and recommend a resolution to the situation
  8. Prepare documents and reports (e.g., field trip reports, employee timecards, incident reports, inspection records, passenger misconduct, mileage logs, student counts, routing information, federal, state standards, and district policy reports, etc.) to document activities providing written support and conveying information. Detail bus problems in a clear and concise manner (e.g., vehicle repair request, etc.) to maintain safe driving and operating conditions
  9. Report observations and incidents involving students (e.g., discipline, accidents, inappropriate social behavior, etc.) to communicate information to appropriate personnel
  10. Clean assigned vehicles (e.g., sweep and mop inside of vehicle, wipe down seats, clean windows, etc.) to ensure the safety, appearance, and sanitation of vehicle
  11. Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections (e.g., fluid levels, tire pressure, exterior condition, walk-around inspection including lights, etc.) to ensure the safe operating condition of the vehicle and comply with mandated guidelines
  12. Maintain fluids in assigned vehicle (e.g., gas, oil, water, anti-freeze, etc.) to maintain vehicles in safe operating condition
  13. Conduct emergency evacuation drills as mandated by state standards to ensure efficiency of procedures and compliance with mandated requirements
  14. Respond to inquiries (e.g., students, parents, other school personnel, etc.) to provide and convey information
  15. Participate in meetings, workshops, trainings and seminars, as assigned to convey and gather information required to perform functions
  16. Adapt to changing work priorities and work with frequent interruptions, as required
  17. Support a team environment by collaborating with own and other work units to effectively perform the duties of the position
  18. Maintain regular and predictable attendance to fulfill job requirements efficiently and effectively
  19. Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling up to 50 pounds, might need to drag up to 125 pounds, some climbing and balancing, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 90% sitting, 5% walking, and 5% standing. The job is performed in varying atmospheric conditions.
