What are the responsibilities and job description for the Bakery Manager position at Salmonberry Goods?
Salmonberry is Seattle's farm-to-table sourdough bakery, bringing people and farmers closer together through food since 2014. In 2020, we expanded to deliver small farm veg, fruit and meat alongside our fresh bread to homes across Seattle in a food movement to preserve farmland and the earth. In 2024, we opened our baker-grocer retail shop in Sunset Hill, the only grocery in town to source exclusively from those same small farmers of Washington. Every week, we produce hundreds of loaves of sourdough bread, large runs of craft pastry, kombucha, soups, pasta, and more.
As bakery manager, you'll be responsible for daily operations at our kitchen: taking point on fulfillment, week planning, team time management, inventory, menu development, training, scheduling and coverage, contributing to the smooth operation and improvement of all things "production".
Compensation for this management role begins at $60,000k-80,000 DOE. Option for good company healthcare plan, a 30% team discount on anything we carry/make, and further wage and growth opportunities tied to longevity and performance. Minimum of 2 years commitment necessary to be considered for this role. Goal for this position is for a 2-5 year career fit.
As bakery manager, you will:
Take point on the production timetable. Orient preplists to meet and exceed demand and take advantage of space for development, time off, deep cleans and new projects. Build and improve checklists, training, and SOPs to enhance consistency and quality.
Push the cutting edge of sourcing and production within our bakery, that compliment and contribute to our holistic offerings. Contribute to creative development of our menu and holistic systems to further our mission of helping local farms and improving customer accessibility to small farm food. Work with the leadership team to always improve operations, implement tools and systems to increase quality and efficiency.
Keep inventory stocked and fresh while minimizing breakage and outages. Coordinate with Produce, Deli, and Shop teams to manage flow of bread, deli, and bakes across the organization.
Inspire your colleagues on our bakery team while maintaining a peak baseline of professional expectations, speed of work, attention to detail, consistency and craft, while fielding issues gracefully. Further our company culture of positivity, professional excellence, kindness and gentleness.
Ideal availability for this position is Tuesday-Saturday: predominantly, 7am start times on Tuesday and Friday, and 5am start times on Wednesday and Saturday. Must have reliable transportation. (There are also some supporting bake shifts on Monday/Thurs/Sun, and a few 3am shifts in the week that we spread out across the team). As manager, you'll have regular time scheduled off the floor weekly dedicated to meetings and operations.
We value strong leadership by example. Be ready to be the best at breaking down boxes, shaping sourdough, sheet and laminate crackers and pastry doughs, precisely roll out scones, efficiently break down fruit and veg, crush dishes, and scale dry ingredients. Equipment in use includes deck and convection ovens, dough sheeters, spiral and planetary mixers, scales, and detailed shaping work with hands. Physical requirements include being able to work on your feet, frequently bending/reaching and steadily executing repetitive motions, and the ability to lift and carry up to 50lbs.
In everyone at Salmonberry we expect self-motivation, a serious professional awareness of food safety, endurance for full production days and quick responsible transitions around a kitchen. A serious work ethic and multiple years of experience in foodservice, back of house, prep or baking is a must.
