Job Summary:
Under general supervision, the Painter performs journey-level work in preparing and finishing interior and exterior surfaces of university facilities. Responsibilities include surface preparation, plastering, painting, staining, and finishing work to ensure that classrooms, offices, residence halls, and other campus spaces are safe, attractive, and properly maintained. The role is critical to supporting SU’s academic and residential mission by ensuring facilities meet appearance standards and comply with OSHA safety regulations.
Authority and Accountability:
Reports to: Multi Trades Supervisor, Philip Taylor. Reports: None. Budgetary Responsibility: Prepares estimates of time, labor, and materials for assigned projects. Authority: Provides guidance and training to other maintenance staff; may lead on special painting projects.
Required/Minimum Qualifications:
- Four years of progressively responsible experience in the painting trade.
- Comprehensive knowledge of painting methods, surface preparation, and finishing techniques.
- Knowledge of OSHA regulations and workplace safety practices.
- Ability to read blueprints, follow instructions, and prepare estimates.
- Ability to perceive the full color spectrum.
- Ability to work from ladders, rigging, and scaffolding; manipulate heavy equipment and supplies up to 70 lbs.; and work in adverse environments.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in an institutional or higher education setting.
- Familiarity with specialty coatings, signage, and surface restoration techniques.
- Ability to coordinate large-scale projects across multiple campus buildings.

The position is a full-time, non-exempt state role with comprehensive benefits.
