Position Summary
Under the general supervision of the Chief of Police, performs a variety of law enforcement duties to protect life and property, preserve the peace, prevent crime, enforce federal, state, and local laws, and maintain public safety. Officers perform patrol, investigations, traffic enforcement, emergency response, and community policing functions, and may be assigned additional duties as needed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Patrol assigned areas to deter crime and respond to calls for service.
- Enforce federal, state, and local laws and Village ordinances.
- Investigate crimes, crashes, and other incidents.
- Make arrests, issue citations, and prepare reports.
- Collect and preserve evidence and testify in court when required.
- Provide traffic control and emergency assistance.
- Build positive relationships with the community through professional and impartial policing.
- Maintain department equipment, vehicles, and required certifications.
- Complete reports and maintain confidential records accurately and timely.
- Perform other related duties and specialized assignments as directed.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of modern law enforcement practices, criminal and traffic laws, investigative procedures, report writing, and community policing principles. Ability to communicate effectively, exercise sound judgment, operate police equipment safely, and maintain professional relationships with the public and fellow employees.
Working Conditions
Work is performed indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions and may involve exposure to hazardous situations, stressful incidents, and physically demanding activities. Officers must be available to work rotating shifts, evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency call-backs as required.
