Salary Information:

$34.96/hr at Step 1 to 53.29/hr at Step 20

Job Duties Include:

The Assistant County Engineer performs professional engineering duties in the planning, designing, drafting and inspection of departmental projects and performs related work as required. Acts as the assistant to the County Engineer. Supervises and assists in the design and plan preparation of bridge, culvert, grading and paving projects. Reviews, prepares and acquires all regulatory permits and approvals required for the project. Prepares bid documents for the purchase of department road and bridge materials. Oversees the inspection and payments of construction projects in progress. Supervises and assists surveying crews. Prepares cost estimates on planned projects in preparation for bid letting. Preforms and coordinates bridge safety inspections and submittals to the Kansas Department of Transportation. Contacts landowners and makes the necessary arrangements to purchase right-of-way for field projects. Evaluates and designs traffic signage and pavement markings. Assists the County Engineer in the preparation of budges and annual reports. Attends meetings, conferences and professional development programs related to engineering. Performs other duties as deemed necessary or as required.

Requirements


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must have a high school diploma or the equivalent.
  • Must have a valid Driver's License and be insurable under Saline County's fleet insurance policy.
  • Must be a Professional Engineer. Must be licensed by the State of Kansas or obtain a Kansas license within the first twelve (12) months of employment.
  • Must have a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field. Three (3) years experience as a Civil Engineer preferred.
  • Must have strong people management and communication skills.
  • Must have good planning skills.
  • Must have knowledge of road and bridge construction and maintenance methods and techniques.

Physical Requirements:

Determined Work Level: Level 3 – Medium Work. Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly. Ability to communicate ideas by means of the spoken word such as giving assignments or directions. Possess eye/hand/foot coordination sufficient to drive a vehicle. Ability to pick, pinch or otherwise work primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm as in handling. Ability to climb ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Ability to maintain body balance to prevent falling when walking, standing, crouching, or running on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces.
