The Vice President of Quality and Risk Management will provide leadership in the development, implementation and management of the quality, patient safety, licensing/regulatory, risk management, and infection control programs forthe organization in collaboration with the leaders of the various programs.The Vice President of Quality and Risk Management will focus on the improvement of the quality and safety of care provided to patients, ensure processes to improve the monitoring and control of risk, and provide leadership to hospital and medical staff leaders to continually meet the highest standards of quality and accreditation for the hospital and medical staff. The Vice President of Quality and Risk Management will connect organizational objectives for quality, risk reduction, and patient safety with performance improvement activities to improve clinical outcomes and provide effective reporting to senior leaders, the medical and nursing staff, and the board.

  • Working with the Risk Manager, oversees the proactive risk management program in order to reduce the economic impact of indemnity and expense payments related to claims. Oversees Risk Manager's investigation and analysis of actual and potential risks; assesses liability and probability of legal action; and recommends appropriate actions to minimize organizational risks.
  • Assumes a senior leadership role in collaboration with the Risk Manager in the formulation of a risk management policy and the formulation/updating of the organizational risk management plans and risk policies and procedures.
  • Provides leadership and direction regarding departmental performance by completing evaluations, maintaining staff competency and development, adequate staffing, and assures all work in specified areas is completed while maintaining a high level of quality.
  • Oversees the investigations of sentinel and other high risk events and root cause and/or proactive risk reduction criticality analyses conducted by the Patient Safety Manager/staff.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Quality and Patient Safety, oversees public reporting for all required and voluntary reporting to federal and state regulatory and accrediting agencies. Ensure accurate and timely completion of all data abstraction/data entry for all required and voluntary reporting to federal and state regulatory and accrediting agencies.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Quality and Patient Safety coordinates activities of the Quality and Safety Committee and develops a comprehensive patient safety plan.
  • Develop system wide dashboards which incorporate KPIs for quality, safety, and risk
  • Works collaboratively with the organization's insurance carrier to develop processes that favorably affect the cost of insurance.
  • Reports organizational quality and risk management data to the Board of Directors and/or Board subcommittees as required.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Accreditation and Regulatory Compliance, ensures compliance with state and federal laws, accreditation, professional and regulatory agency standards and licensure requirements as they relate to the practice of healthcare.
  • Assumes fiscal responsibility for the quality, risk management, regulatory/accreditation and infection control programs including operating and capital budget preparation, labor and supply cost management.
  • Champion efforts with clinical/ancillary/support service leaders in process improvement, collaborative teamwork, open communication and problem solving to minimize risk and ensure the effective coordination and integration of quality care delivery.
  • Provides support and supervision to the Infection Control department to ensure appropriate surveillance activities as well as compliance with all required state/federal reporting.
  • Monitors employee performance and counsels and disciplines as necessary. Responds and follows up regarding staff concerns in a timely manner.
  • Maintains constructive and collegial relations with legal counsel, insurance company representatives and other external advisors/constituents.
  • Maintains a focus on patient/community relations, providing feedback regarding positive and negative patient comments and participating in patient experience initiatives.
  • Maintains a current knowledge of quality, patient safety, risk management, and infection control standards and regulatory/accreditation requirements.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education: Bachelor's degree in nursing or healthcare related field required. A Master's Degree or greater preferred.

Licensure: Current California Registered Nurse license (RN) or related healthcare provider license required.

Experience: Five (5) years of experience and/or oversight in the areas of quality, risk management, regulatory/accreditation and/or infection control in an acute care hospital, with a record of achieving performance goals. At least three (3) years progressive leadership responsibility with experience leading large multi-disciplinary teams and working successfully across disciplines in a complex organization.

Substantial knowledge of:


  • Principles, theories and practices related to performance improvement, risk management, patient safety and infection control.
  • Demonstrated ability to gather, organize, analyze, synthesize, interpret data and use it to identify and solve problems and seize opportunities.
  • Knowledge of laws, regulations and hospital guidelines pertaining to CMS Conditions of Participation, TJC Standards pertaining to successful accreditation, Title 22 and other state regulations related to hospital licensing.
  • Evidence of a leadership style which emphasizes collegiality, teamwork, participation and communication.
  • Leadership skills including:
    • Broad vision of the future of the health care industry
    • Excellent presentation skills in presenting information
    • Must be able to convey ideas and information effectively to all groups of employees and professionals.
    • Sensitivity to the values and expectations of management, medical staff, Board of Directors, employees, and community.
    • Requires professional leadership, guidance and direction to assigned staff to ensure the highest quality care and service is provided as well as serving as a professional resource for departmental staff and peers regarding operations, planning and problem solving.
  • Experience working in an organization/community with a diverse medical staff, workforce and patient population.
