About the Position
Salesian High School seeks a skilled and mission-driven School Counselor to work within its
Guidance Office, supporting students with academic planning, college preparation, career
exploration, and personal development. Reporting to the Principal, the School Counselor provides
individualized support to students as well as to the broader school community, working closely with
teachers, administrators, and families to ensure a supportive learning environment that facilitates
student success. This is an opportunity not only to counsel students, but to help shape the culture and
systems that make student pathways navigable and meaningful in our society.
Key Responsibilities
• Provide academic advising to help students select appropriate courses, develop four-year
academic plans, and plan for graduation
• Assist students with college discovery and applications, providing guidance on requirements,
deadlines, essay development, and financial aid planning
• Conduct individual and group counseling sessions to address personal, social, and emotional
issues, with sensitivity to the developmental needs of young men
• Offer individualized career counseling to help students explore career paths, vocational
training, and industry-aligned pathways as part of their development
• Develop and implement comprehensive counseling programs that address the holistic needs
of students, including social-emotional learning, leadership development, and life skills
• Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and parents to support student success and foster a
cohesive, mission-aligned school culture
• Identify and address barriers to student learning and development; work proactively with
students at risk of falling behind
• Facilitate conflict resolution between students, mediating disputes and promoting positive
communication and restorative practices
• Coordinate standardized testing (PSAT, SAT, AP, etc.) and interpret results to assist students
in setting academic and career goals
• Monitor student progress and maintain detailed records on academic performance,
counseling interactions, and personal development using Naviance and other platforms
• Provide crisis intervention and support to students facing emergencies, trauma, or acute
mental health needs; connect students and families to appropriate community resources
• Promote mental health awareness and educate students on coping strategies, resilience, and
emotional well-being
• Engage families as active partners in their son’s academic journey and personal growth;
communicate proactively regarding student progress, concerns, and opportunities
• Participate in professional development opportunities to stay current on best practices in
school counseling, college admissions, and adolescent development
• Advocate for student needs within the school and the wider community, serving as a
committed voice for each young man in the Salesian community
• Demonstrate professionalism, respect, and integrity in all interactions with students,
colleagues, families, and the broader Salesian community
Required Qualifications
• A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in School Counseling
• New York State certification or licensure as a School Counselor, or eligibility for certification
• Experience working with high school students in a counseling or educational setting
• Demonstrated knowledge of college admissions processes, financial aid resources, and career
development frameworks
• Experience with Naviance and Google Suite; comfort with student information systems and
data management
• Strong communication skills, verbal and written, with the ability to work effectively with
students, families, faculty, and administrators
• Willingness to consent to a background check and participate in Archdiocesan and Salesian
“Safeguarding” training
• Commitment to the Catholic and Salesian educational mission of the school, including a
willingness to be formed in Salesian charism and the preventive system
Preferred Qualifications
• Prior experience as a school counselor in a Catholic, independent, or college preparatory
school environment
• Expertise in college admissions advising, scholarship identification, and financial aid
navigation
• Experience developing or leading social-emotional learning programs, career exploration
initiatives, or student wellness programming
• Familiarity with career pathway frameworks, work-based learning models, or college and
career readiness assessment tools
• Bilingual or multilingual communication skills
Compensation & Application
Salary Range: $55,000 – $70,000, depending on experience and level of education
