Sales Transformation Leader
Portsmouth, VA Full Time
POSTED ON 7/31/2026

Sales Associate — New Car Sales

You Already Have the Hardest Skill in This Job. We'll Teach You the Rest.

It sounds like you're good at something most job postings don't even know how to ask for: reading a stranger in the first ten seconds, staying warm when they're not, and making someone feel taken care ofeven on your worst night. If you've ever worked a floor, a bar, a host stand, or a phone queue, that's not a“soft skill.” That's the whole job, and most people who could actually do it are standing in restaurants rightnow wondering why the tips are down again.

Here's the part that seems backwards until you think about it for a second: the industry doesn't actuallyneed more “salespeople.” It has plenty of those. What it's short on is people who already know how to runa room, hold their composure with someone who's had a long day, and make a stranger feel like a guestinstead of a transaction. That's a serving skill, a bartending skill, a hosting skill, a call-center skill. We just happen to pay a lot better for it.

So — would it be a bad time to talk about doing the thing you're already great at, for better money and a schedule that isn't built around someone else's dinner reservation?

If This Sounds Like You, You'll Transition Well Here

  • Servers & bartenders — you already read tables, manage multiple “customers” at once, upsell without sounding like you're upselling, and stay calm when someone's unhappy about something thatisn't your fault.
  • Hosts & hostesses — you already make the first ten seconds of an experience feel warm, organized, and unhurried. That's the entire opening of our sales process.
  • BDC and call center reps — you already know how to build rapport on the phone, ask good questions, and set an appointment someone actually shows up to.

None of that experience needs to be relabeled or hidden. It's the reason you'd be good at this.

Who We Are

We're not a “hard sell” dealership, and we didn't build our process pretending buying a car has to feel likeone. Southern's whole approach is client-centric, frictionless, memorable — on purpose. We tell clients upfront that we don't believe buying a vehicle should be hard, and we mean it: no pressure, no manager games, no pretending timing is the objection when it's really trust. Clients don't avoid dealerships because they're not interested — they avoid them because they don't trust the experience. So we built one worth trusting.

That matters for you too, not just the customer. You're not walking onto a floor where you're expected to be pushy to survive. You're walking into a structure where leadership owns the numbers and the close, so you can stay focused on the customer, the product, and the experience — the exact things you're already good at.

What You'd Actually Be Doing Guiding clients through a calm, guided buying experience — greeting, understanding what they actually need, and walking them through vehicles that fit

  • Building genuine rapport instead of running a script — the same instinct that makes someone a regularat your bar makes them a repeat client here
  • Setting and keeping appointments, following up without being pushy, and staying present without being needy
  • Working alongside a sales manager and finance team who handle the structure, the numbers, and the paperwork — so you're not carrying the whole deal alone
  • Getting coached, daily, on a repeatable process — not left to “figure out sales” on your own

What We're Looking For

You don't need automotive experience. You need the instincts you've already built: composure under pressure, genuine warmth with strangers, the ability to read what someone actually wants instead of what they say first, and a work ethic that doesn't clock out just because the rush is over. How could this not be worth a conversation? Worst case, you learn what a modern, frictionless sales floor actually looks like, and it's not for you. Best case, it's the move you didn't know was sitting right in front of

you.

Apply today. Bring the skills you already have — we'll teach you the rest.
