Part time Dietary aide is responsible for preparing and serving meals to residents, ensuring they meet dietary guidelines and restrictions. Key duties include assisting with food preparation, serving meals, delivering food to resident rooms, and cleaning the kitchen and dining areas. This role also involves monitoring residents' food intake, checking meal accuracy, and collaborating with dietitians to accommodate patient needs. .
Duties and responsibilities
Kitchen and dining area sanitation
- Maintain a clean and sanitary work environment by following all food safety and infection control guidelines.
- Clean and sanitize kitchen equipment, dishes, utensils, and food preparation surfaces.
- Set up and clear tables in the dining room before and after each meal.
- Sweep and mop floors, and remove trash and recycling from the kitchen and dining areas.
Resident and team interaction
- Interact with residents in a courteous and friendly manner, building rapport to enhance their dining experience.
- Communicate with nursing staff or dietitians about resident feedback, changes in appetite, or any concerns regarding a resident's diet.
- Work collaboratively with cooks, nurses, and other dietary staff to ensure efficient and coordinated meal service.
- Assemble meal trays accurately, following diet orders for texture-modified or therapeutic diets, such as low-sodium or pureed.
- Serve meals in the dining area or deliver trays to residents' rooms on a timely basis, ensuring they are appetizing and at the proper temperature.
- Assist residents who need help with their meals, such as with opening containers or arranging utensils.
- Prepare and deliver between-meal snacks and supplements as prescribed in the residents' care plans.
Administrative and stocking duties
- Assist with inventory management, including storing food and supplies and notifying management when stock is low.
- Document meal records and resident food intake as required.
Skills and qualifications
- Education and certifications: A high school diploma or equivalent is generally required. Many positions prefer or require a food handler's license or certification, depending on state and local regulations.
- Experience: Previous food service experience is often preferred, but on-the-job training may be available. Experience working in a healthcare or long-term care setting can be beneficial.
- Physical stamina: The role requires standing and walking for long periods, pushing heavy carts, and the ability to lift and carry a certain amount of weight.
- Communication: Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential for interacting with residents, their families, and staff.
- Attention to detail: The ability to follow specific instructions is crucial for portion control and adhering to dietary restrictions and allergies.
- Compassion: A kind, patient, and empathetic attitude is needed when working with elderly and ill residents.
