About Salem’s Pathways to Teaching Initiatives

Salem Public Schools is actively working to build, strengthen, and expand multiple pathways and pipelines that lead to licensure and employment as a teacher. Currently, we have opportunities for existing high school students, staff members, and others to explore and consider one of several pathways to become a teacher, including:


  • Existing Salem High School students
    may explore teaching as a future career through one of two entry points: 1) Early Education & Care Pathway through Career & Technical Education; or 2) Early College Pathway (Education focus)
  • Existing SPS staff members may now consider teaching as a future career and receive support through the following entry points: 1) PSRP tuition reimbursement; 2) DESE’s Paraprofessional Teacher Education Grant Program, 3) Middlesex Community College Teacher Pipeline Program; 4) Salem State University’s Teacher Pipeline Development Initiative; and 5) Salem’s Registered Teacher Apprenticeship (RTAP) Program; and 6) and other pathways such as the mentored pathway.


What You’ll Do

The Salem Pathways to Teaching Coordinator will work closely with the Executive Director of Human Resources to develop and implement coherent strategy across Salem’s various teacher pathway and pipeline development initiatives. The Coordinator will serve as a liaison to other SPS staff members working on pathway programs (such as Early College) and will be responsible for the daily operations of others (such as the RTAP program). The Coordinator will also serve as a liaison with key institutional/higher education partners. With the ongoing goal of increasing coordination and coherence across each separate initiative, the Coordinator will convene planning meetings, organize professional learning opportunities and events, identify and disseminate resources focused on best practices in educator pathways, develop and track key data and reports related to this work, assist with recruiting a diverse talent pool for our educator pathways, support the Office of Human Resources with its ability to expand talent pipelines, and other duties as assigned. In addition, the Coordinator will help write and increase grant funding and support for Salem’s pathway programs.


Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the ED of HR to clarify, promote, and carry out the strategic goals of Salem’s Teacher Pathways programs
  • Strengthen and expand pipeline programs in order to meet stated goals
  • Explore opportunities to develop and leverage new pathways such opportunities for SHS graduates and/or Salem State University students to gain on-the-job experience working as substitutes, paraprofessionals, and other roles while preparing to become teachers
  • Develop key data and reporting systems to support educator pipeline programs
  • Continuously monitor and track progress through data systems
  • Complete applications for grant funding and ensure compliance for awarded grants
  • Serve as liaison with institutional partners such as Salem State University and/or the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to implement educator pathway programs
  • Coordinate and convene planning meetings with both internal and external leaders as needed
  • Develop and work with key partnerships that support pipeline goals
  • Develop, organize, and/or implement professional development opportunities
  • Ensure all key meetings are scheduled in participants’ calendars
  • Actively support recruitment and retention of diverse educators to take part in our educator pipeline programs
  • Develop networks and affinity groups as needed
  • Support program participants to successfully complete their education programs, licensure, and other exams required for their position, including but not limited to:
    • Develops and organizes a scope and sequence for each of the pathways
    • Plans and delivers professional development and information sessions
    • Maintaining an accurate database of current TPP participants to track progress
    • and completion of the program
  • Devises innovative strategies to increase awareness about TPP program, pursuing

opportunities to provide professional development to other districts and

organizations to implement the program

  • Develop program materials including flyers, brochures, website content, and other materials as needed
  • Supports the Office of Human Resources with recruitment and staffing efforts as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree (Master’s Degree preferred)
  • MA Educator license preferred (not required)
  • Previous experience working on educator preparation or paraprofessional/teacher professional development
  • At least 2 years of professional experience working in partnership with higher educational institutions or other related partnerships
  • Strong facilitation and presentation skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with others, foster collaboration, and enhance team growth
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Highly organized and ability to leverage technology, including data tracking and reporting tools
  • Excellent organization, time management, and follow-through
  • Passionate about the mission of supporting teacher pathways in Salem
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to Salem Public Schools’ core values of belonging, equity, and opportunity
  • Commitment to equity and belief that all students can learn
  • Ability to communicate respectfully with students, staff, and families from a variety of cultural backgrounds
  • Access and ability to travel for events
  • Second language (Spanish and/or Portuguese) proficiency a plus

Reports to: Executive Director of Human Resources


Work Year:
This is a full-time, full-year position (Note - this is a grant-funded position. Funding anticipated through June 2027. Continuation depends on availability of funding)


Compensation/Salary:
$65,000 to $90,000 per year


Work Location
: Central Office (this is primarily an in-person position with flexibility as appropriate)
