Role: Under the supervision of Student Affairs professionals, the Student Affairs intern at Salem Community College will gain hands-on experience supporting student services, engagement initiatives, and administrative operations while developing professional competencies applicable to careers in higher education, public service, nonprofit organizations, and related fields. 

 

Learning Objectives 

By the conclusion of the internship, the student will be able to: 

  1. Apply professional workplace skills such as communication, teamwork, time management, and problem-solving within a higher education environment. 

  1. Demonstrate technical and administrative competencies related to student services operations, including the use of office technology, data systems, and event coordination tools. 

  1. Connect academic learning to career pathways by understanding the role of Student Affairs in supporting student success, equity, and engagement, and by articulating transferable skills relevant to future employment or continued education.

Major Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Assist with the planning, coordination, and support of student programs, events, and engagement initiatives 

  • Provide front-line support for Student Affairs offices, including communication with students, data entry, and scheduling 

  • Support student outreach efforts, including orientations, workshops, and retention initiatives 

  • Maintain records and assist with basic reporting and assessment activities 

  • Collaborate with staff on special projects aligned with institutional goals and student success initiatives 

  • Demonstrate professionalism, confidentiality, and effective communication in a higher education setting 

Qualifications:
Knowledge and Skills: 
 
Experience                          Customer service skills preferred.   
 
Education                            Currently enrolled in a degree program at an accredited college or university, preferably at Salem Community                                                        College.  
 
Interpersonal Skills              Ability to work with a diverse student/staff population at various  levels. 
Ability to exercise tact, patience, initiative, persistence, and good judgment. 
Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, especially with  students and staff. 
 
Technical Skills                    Working knowledge of current and emerging computer hardware and software, including Microsoft Office products.   
 
 
Other Skills                         Demonstrate ability to be self-disciplined, professional, and  motivated.  Demonstrate a pleasant, outgoing                                                              personality, a stable  and courteous disposition, and a record of dependability.
                                                                  Demonstrate the ability to concentrate in a busy environment with  frequent interruptions to workflow. 
 
Physical Requirements                   The work is mostly sedentary; however, there may be some walking, standing, bending, carrying of light items,                                                                  driving an automobile, etc.  No special physical demands are required to perform the work. 
 
Work Environment                           Regular exposure to favorable conditions such as those found in a normal office.
