Salem City Schools is looking for qualified applicants for the position of part-time and full-time general education and special education instructional assistants for the 2024-2025 school year. 

 

 

INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT – 3.10

 

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK:

Performs responsible human support and paraprofessional work assisting classroom teachers by working with individual students or small groups; does related work as required.  Work is performed under the regular supervision of the classroom teacher.  This is a non-exempt position as defined by the Fair Labor Standards Act.

 

This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside environmental conditions, and noise.  The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:

Assisting the classroom teacher with instructional activities; assisting students to reinforce material already presented through special efforts and repetitions; preparing and maintaining files and reports.  The Instructional Assistant also…..

  • Assists classroom teacher(s) in performing specific duties as assigned;
  • Works with individuals or small groups to reinforce material introduced by teacher;
  • Assists in maintaining student records;
  • Assists with grading and recording grades under teacher’s supervision;
  • Maintains appropriate contact with parents, administrators and teachers;
  • Performs a variety of clerical duties including typing, copying, collating, etc.;
  • Assists with large group activities;
  • Guides independent study and other work assigned by teacher;
  • Informs teacher on student problems;
  • Sells supplies, milk, collects and accounts for monies received;
  • Performs cafeteria, hall and bus duties;
  • Assists with lunch, snack, clean-up, lavatory, clothing and wash-up routines;
  • Participates in in-service training programs as assigned;
  • Performs related tasks as required.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

General knowledge of the practices, methods and techniques used in classroom teaching; ability to maintain confidential files and information and to compile reports; ability to deal effectively with students and teachers; skill in the use of classroom and instructional equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with teachers, parents, students and the general public.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and some experience in working with children.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of or ability to acquire appropriate license(s), certificate(s) and/or endorsement(s) for position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board.

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK:

Performs responsible human support and paraprofessional work assisting classroom teachers by working with individual special needs students or small groups; may be assigned as personal aide to a single student during school day; does related work as required.  Work is performed under the regular supervision of assigned teachers and building Principal.  This is a non-exempt position as defined by the Fair Labor Standards Act.

 

This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects, and some medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping; vocal communication is required for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside environmental conditions, and noise.  The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:

Assisting teacher or other professional to achieve instructional objectives; assisting special education students with achieving established goals, with personal care and mobility; preparing and maintaining files and records.  The Special Education Instructional Assistant also…..

  • Assists classroom teacher in performing specific duties as assigned or undertaking specialized tasks to achieve and enhance instructional objectives;
  • Records test data as assigned;
  • Assists with maintaining various records and files, keeps confidential files, test scores and related records and performs other clerical duties;
  • Works with individuals or small groups to reinforce material introduced by teacher;
  • Provides programmed practice activities and repetitions;
  • Works with computers to perform inventory, records and teaching activities; may train, set up and install;
  • Assists with large group activities;
  • Escorts students to special classes, library, therapy, etc.;
  • Guides independent study and other work assigned by teacher;
  • Advises teacher on student problems;
  • Assists students with disabilities, assists with loading and unloading buses;
  • Assists students or an assigned student with breakfast, lunch, snack, clean-up, lavatory, clothing, personal hygiene, and wash-up routines;
  • Participates in in-service training programs as assigned;
  • Performs related tasks as required.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

General knowledge of the practices, methods and techniques used in the teaching of special education population; ability to maintain confidential files and information and to compile reports; ability to deal effectively with special students and teachers; skill in the use of classroom and instructional equipment; ability to operate audio visual, standard office, word and data processing equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with teachers, parents, students and the general public.
