Salem Capital Management Overview:

Salem Capital Management, based in Providence, Rhode Island, is a single-family office focused primarily on direct private equity investments, growth equity investments, and co-investments. SCM was founded in 2020 by Paul Salem, a co-founder of Providence Equity Partners and current Chairman of MGM Resorts International and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. During Paul’s 27-year tenure at Providence Equity, he helped grow AUM from $171 million to over $50 Billion. Paul served as a director on many of Providence’s most successful portfolio companies, including Asurion, Eircom, Grupo TorreSur, Madison River Telecom, MetroNet (formerly AT&T Canada), PanAmSat, Tele1 Europe, Verio, and Wired Magazine. Paul also established the firm’s London office, launched Providence Equity’s credit affiliate Benefit Street Partners, and launched Providence Public, a long/short hedge fund. In 2020, Chris Satti joined SCM as President. Chris is a Rhode Island native who previously spent 10 years in private equity at Audax Group, where he helped launch and lead the firm’s San Francisco office. Paul Donahue joined in 2021 and is a Principal at SCM and has prior experience at Providence Equity Partners and Bank of America Merrill Lynch. Rob Kiska joined SCM in 2024 as a Senior Associate and has prior experience at Providence Equity Partners and Capstone Partners. Paul, Chris, and Paul are all alumni of Harvard Business School.

SCM invests behind companies across a range of industries, stages, and geographies. The investment mandate is flexible by design, but key focus areas include (a) investing behind dynamic media, consumer, and tech-enabled services companies globally, (b) backing local companies in Rhode Island and greater New England, and (c) opportunities where our experience and / or relationships gives us unique angles and insight. In all situations, SCM takes a people-first approach, backing excellent management teams and helping them flourish with patient capital and active, board-level strategic support.

A substantial portion of the returns generated by SCM will ultimately be invested philanthropically by The Salem Foundation, which supports a variety of charitable causes that help bridge the opportunity gap globally and mitigate climate change through innovation. Key investments of the Salem Foundation include Year Up, Edesia Global Nutrition, and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

• Dentex Health – 100 practice dental practice management business based in the UK (minority capital)
• Dalet – French software company serving television broadcasters and media studios (minority capital)
• Lola Restaurant Group – high-end restaurant group with locations in Nantucket, Boston, and Palm Beach, Florida (minority capital)

In addition to private direct deals, SCM also opportunistically makes public market investments, co-investments, and fund investments.

Job Description:

SCM is seeking to hire an Associate on its direct investment team. This role will be an integral part of a close-knit team, with opportunities for long-term career advancement. This is an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on transaction experience evaluating private and public investment opportunities while helping to scale and build an investment firm alongside an experienced leadership team.

This role will be responsible for assisting in the evaluation and execution of new investment opportunities, working with existing portfolio companies on strategic initiatives, and firm growth and management initiatives. Candidates should demonstrate excellent analytical skills and be comfortable owning financial models, analyzing data sets, and developing views on investments. Candidates should also possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, intellectual curiosity, a long-term interest in investment, and a proven ability to operate successfully in team environments.

Ideal candidates will have 1-3 years of investment banking, consulting, and / or private equity experience with an interest in applying those skills in an entrepreneurial, fast-paced, and lean environment focused on investing.

SCM is a young company and a flat organization, so candidates should be excited about the wide variety of work, pace, and opportunities for increased responsibility. Scrappiness, creativity, persistence, and positivity are musts.

The role is based in Providence, Rhode Island, but SCM provides flexibility around hybrid work arrangements in Boston or nearby cities. Ties to Rhode Island / New England are a plus.
