What are the responsibilities and job description for the CVD Lab Manager position at Salaried/Skilled Trades Careers at NSG Group?
Purpose:
The purpose of this position is to ensure the efficient operation of the CVD lab which includes supervising lab personnel, developing lab experiments, work on plant trials, and work with other personnel in R&D all while achieving the objectives of the department and the R&D group.
Essential Functions:
Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) Laboratory:
Safety & Compliance
- Maintain safety-first mentality in CVD lab by ensuring all personnel comply with relevant safety and environmental procedures
- Complete risk assessments, root cause analysis, and corrective actions as needed in response to safety, quality, or environmental concerns
- Maintain systems for environmental and safety records
- Lead implementation of 5S and housekeeping routines throughout CVD lab to enhance workplace safety and organization
Operational Performance and Standardization
- Develop and maintain ongoing schedule for lab asset utilization
- Coordinate daily assignments for CVD lab engineers, technicians, and interns
- Prepare chemicals and delivery systems for CVD lab experiments
- Work with Project Managers to ensure that experimental plans are consistent with CVD coating system capabilities and that experiments are completed as agreed
- Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures, setup sheets, and checklists to ensure standardization and repeatability of lab systems
- Ensure daily activities and lab performance are tracked
- Identify and lead projects to enhance lab systems to improve reliability and output
Equipment Maintenance and Improvement
- Troubleshoot CVD coaters and furnaces as needed
- Develop and implement preventative maintenance routines on lab equipment to ensure reliability
- Coordinate repair and maintenance needs with contractors or suppliers
- Ensure LOTO system is established and followed for all lab equipment
- Identify required spare parts and manage inventory
- Identify and implement opportunities to enhance or expand capabilities of lab equipment
Personnel Management and Development
- Lead recruitment activities for lab technicians and interns
- Develop and implement training plans for all new lab operators
- Lead training efforts on new and revised processes for all relevant lab personnel
- Manage performance of lab technicians and interns to promote safe and effective behaviors
Support Services
- Coordinate sample requests from Architectural Business Development and Sales Teams
- Manage inventory and ensure 5S standards are followed in architectural glass storage
Plant Trials:
- Ensure operation of trial equipment is conducted safely by completing risk assessments, PFMEAs and developing safe procedures. Ensure operators are following required safety procedures
- Design, build, setup, and operate chemical delivery systems for plant coating trials
- Coordinate repair and maintenance needs of trial equipment. Ensure equipment is updated to maintain latest safety requirements
- Ensure that R&D chemical delivery equipment is compatible with existing plant systems and that it is ready for coating trials. Coordinate with plant personnel as needed to ensure functional set ups
- Maintain accurate, reliable records of operating conditions and set points for R&D equipment
EHS and Quality Systems
- Adhere to NSG/Pilkington Standards of Business Conduct and its Values and Principles.
- Adhere to EH&S policies at Northwood and at the manufacturing plants to ensure that all development work complies with these policies.
- Maintain Quality records in accordance with ISO9001 standards.

Qualifications Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Engineering Technology, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science or similar
- Ability to handle hazardous chemicals safely.
- Demonstrated ability to use hand-tools and to assemble and operate industrial equipment.
- Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written).
- Proficient in the English language (verbal and written).
- Ability to travel both domestically and internationally (20-30%).
Qualifications Desired:
- Ability to operate and troubleshoot delivery systems for gaseous and liquid chemical precursors.
- Demonstrated ability to organize samples and process data.
- Experience with the relevant laboratory equipment, e.g. furnaces, chemical flow controllers, PID control, temperature and pressure measurements, etc.
- Experience with industrial design software such as AutoCAD.
