General Information:
This is a district-level position which will provide professional leadership, consultation, and support of the district¿s preK-5 East African Language and Culture program and teachers through the Office of Teaching and Learning. This position will help ensure effective implementation of district materials, curriculum, and instruction in the East African Language and Culture school, according to district initiatives. This position will also provide support for the district's Bilingual Seal assessments.
Reporting Relationship:
This is a district-level position that will report to a supervisor in the Office of Teaching and Learning.
Qualifications
Valid elementary education teaching license issued by the Minnesota Department of Education.
Three years of successful teaching or coaching experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's Degree, or equivalent.
Experience in elementary education.
Familiarity with heritage language models of instruction and pedagogy.
Experience in early literacy.
Experience in professional learning communities.
Language skill level: Advanced or higher rating on the ACTFL proficiency scale in an East African language.
Familiarity with the Minnesota Bilingual Seals and the ACTFL levels of language proficiency; able to lead district initiatives relative to St. Paul Public Schools East African language assessments for the Bilingual Seal.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Excellent language skills in all four domains (writing, reading, speaking, and listening) in an East African language. Ability to effectively communicate (in both an East African language and English) with all stakeholders, including district coaches, building coaches, administrators/principals, teachers, supervisors, students, and families.
Ability to lead small group instruction elementary classrooms.
Ability to understand and interpret data on multiple platforms, such as BOLT, FAST, and HMH.
Effectively lead and collaborate on teams with both the principal and teachers.
Knowledge of curriculum needs in an elementary program.
Ability to translate from English into an East African language.
Knowledge of instructional technology used in SPPS classrooms and administrative support systems.
Understand and be able to effectively model the delivery of culturally relevant teaching practices.
Responsibilities:
The essential job functions include but are not limited to the following fundamental duties:
Collaboratively work with grade level teams as part of the PLC process.
Use data to plan, implement and deliver instruction and differentiate learning in interventions.
Facilitate and/or participate in meetings with staff to discuss curriculum and district initiatives and provide professional development.
Collaborate with staff to assist with implementation of curriculum and model lessons.
Provide direction and leadership for staff who are integrating East African culture into the curriculum in alignment with state standards and in collaboration with district personnel.
Development of teacher-friendly systems for archiving materials and curriculum frameworks for staff.
Provide leadership with the Bilingual Seal and lead district initiatives relative to St. Paul Public Schools¿ assessments of East African languages.
Communicate with various stakeholders as needed; provide reports and data when requested.
Attend training, conferences, workshops, etc., to enhance job knowledge and skills. Self-transport to district sites as needed.
Contribute to the District's Strong Schools, Strong Communities efforts by partnering with other staff to contribute to student achievement and the alignment and sustainability of resources. Perform other related duties as assigned.
