The Lower School Substitute Teacher is responsible for maintaining a safe, engaging, and developmentally appropriate learning environment in the absence of the regular classroom teacher. This role supports the academic and social-emotional needs of students in grades PreK–5 and upholds the school's mission and values.
Responsibilities
- Maintain classroom discipline and a positive learning environment in accordance with school policies and Lower School expectations.
- Implement lesson plans provided by the regular teacher, ensuring continuity of instruction and student engagement.
- Organize students for practical instruction and support transitions throughout the day.
- Complete a Substitute Teacher Report Form to communicate with the regular teacher about the day’s activities and student progress.
- Collect and organize student work for the regular teacher’s review.
- Communicate professionally with students, faculty, and staff.
- Comply with and support all school regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Lower School Division Head or designee.
- Bachelor’s degree required; coursework or experience in elementary education preferred.
- Prior experience working with children in a school or educational setting.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to follow lesson plans and adapt to classroom needs.
- Demonstrated professionalism, flexibility, and reliability.
- May be required to stand, walk, and supervise students for extended periods.
- Work in a dynamic school environment with young children and a variety of classrooms.
- Work primarily in a climatecontrolled classroom; may occasionally work outdoors.
- Must be able to lift and carry materials up to 25 lbs.
