Saint Mary's College is seeking a professional, dependable, and service-oriented Campus Safety Officer to help maintain a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for students, faculty, staff, visitors, and the College community.

Under the supervision of the Shift Supervisor and Chief of Campus Public Safety, the Campus Safety Officer performs public safety functions including campus patrol, emergency response, incident investigation, building security, traffic and parking enforcement, and assistance to members of the campus community and the public.

The successful candidate will demonstrate sound judgment, integrity, professionalism, strong communication skills, and the ability to remain calm and effective during emergency situations. Campus Safety Officers are expected to follow the established chain of command and represent Saint Mary's College and the Department of Campus Public Safety in an honorable, professional, and impartial manner.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Must successfully pass a criminal history background check.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, in person and by telephone.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound reasoning and judgment.
  • Ability to walk, drive, and respond to emergencies in a timely manner.
  • Ability to provide emergency first aid assistance.
  • Ability to successfully complete and maintain all required departmental training and certifications.
  • Ability to interact professionally and respectfully with students, faculty, staff, visitors, and members of the public.
  • Ability to follow the established chain of command.
  • Ability to enforce applicable federal, state, and local laws, as well as College rules and regulations, within the scope of the position.
  • Ability to operate departmental equipment and perform assigned safety functions.
  • Demonstrated integrity and professionalism in representing the College and the Department of Campus Public Safety.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous law enforcement, public safety, security, military, or related experience.
  • Experience responding to emergency situations.
  • Experience working in a higher education or campus environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Ability to remain calm, professional, and effective in stressful situations.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Job Responsibilities
  • Conduct campus patrols and monitor College property to promote a safe and secure environment.
  • Lock and secure buildings according to established policies and procedures.
  • Monitor campus grounds and buildings for unauthorized entry or activity.
  • Conduct preliminary investigations of incidents and accidents and prepare appropriate reports in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Respond to medical emergencies and provide emergency first aid assistance in accordance with established procedures.
  • Assist with transportation to medical facilities when required and authorized.
  • Provide information, directions, assistance, and other customer service to guests, visitors, students, faculty, staff, and members of the community.
  • Enforce College traffic and parking regulations and issue citations in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Conduct and/or assist with fire and safety inspections of campus buildings and grounds.
  • Identify and report hazardous or unsafe conditions.
  • Generate work orders for malfunctioning lights, doors, locks, and other facilities or safety concerns.
  • Direct vehicular and pedestrian traffic and assist with traffic control during special events.
  • Assist local law enforcement agencies on campus when required.
  • Operate departmental equipment and perform duties assigned to Campus Safety Officers.
  • Maintain professional, impartial, and respectful interactions with the campus community and the public.
  • Follow all applicable College policies, procedures, laws, regulations, and departmental directives.
  • Maintain required training certifications and participate in departmental training.
  • Perform other duties and functions as assigned by the Shift Supervisor or Chief of Campus Public Safety.
Schedule

Full-time, 12-month position. The Campus Safety Officer schedule will be based on the operational needs of the Department of Campus Public Safety and may include evenings, overnight shifts, weekends, holidays, and special events.

Eligibility to Work

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States at the time of hire and must not require visa sponsorship from the College, either now or in the future.
