Description: The Saint Louis Zoo is seeking applicants for the position of Staff Veterinarian.  The position is one of four clinical veterinarians reporting directly to the Director of Animal Health, and is part of a growing team that also includes a veterinary pathologist (Dipl. ACVP), an ACZM-compliant clinical veterinary resident, a veterinary technician zoological manager, six registered veterinary technicians, a quarantine specialist and an administrative assistant.

Responsibilities: The veterinarian will assist in the care and preventive medicine programs for the Zoo’s taxonomically diverse collection, with animals on three campuses, and the training of residents in an ACZM-compliant residency program in Zoological Medicine. A Safari Park campus is currently being built, providing an opportunity to expand or develop experience with herd medical management in addition to classical zoo animal medical management. A red wolf breeding center is the third campus, providing the opportunity for direct conservation work and skill growth in a very different medical and husbandry management. Duties will include, but are not limited to, clinical medicine, preventive medicine, quarantine and pre-shipment testing, and resident and student mentorship.  The individual will be encouraged to develop internal and external collaborative initiatives that advance zoological medicine and conservation within the scope of the Saint Louis Zoo’s programs, and be active in contributing to the peer-reviewed literature.

Candidates must be able to work both independently and collaboratively, and be able to practice medicine and surgery on all zoo animal species under the Saint Louis Zoo’s care: including anesthesia, diagnostic techniques and preventive medicine. The successful applicant must demonstrate a service mentality, a positive attitude, thrive in a collaborative team dynamic, and align with the Saint Louis Zoo’s values and mission.

All successful candidates for this position will be required to undergo a criminal background check and a drug test. As this is a safety-sensitive role, a negative drug test result is mandatory. The drug test screens for five substances, including marijuana.
